Omaha, somewhere in middle America…

Still on driveabout (walkabout on wheels) but winding down as the unusual suspects fly in tomorrow 2 states ahead of me. But I’ve got time for another two yet, so let’s so see the what what. Got out of downtown proper and just went west. Scriptown, easily identifiable by the cool marque on a strip of brick buildings on a Monday in September at 9pm, loud & lively…

Spacious oval shaped light wood plank topped bar with angled bend corners taken out, horizontal plank base, & a foot bar. Seating for 2 dozen+ all around on wooden chairs. A pair of 8 logo handle tap piping towers on the corners. Brick pillar behind the bar on center with a bar island built onto it. An Untapped board above a flatscreen on both sides of it, over a shelf holding growls and booze countered below. More growls down below and a glassware shelving rack off to one side.

Wood slat floors and rafter ceilings with ductwork & spinnys. Tables along the distressed brick walls to both sides and the front wall all windows with bar counter ledge space below. Drop conehead lamps tracing the bar, single bulbs running an ‘L’ on a pipe the length of one side and to the rear, & drop dangle filament bulbs up front and to the other side.

4X8 alt colored chalkboard listing draft selections (beer, style, & ABV) and a smaller events board (trivia, pint night, growler specials) alongside on the near wall. Framed prints on the far wall and a large logo door piece to the rear. Dumplings happening down that little ramp there (me, pointing). Bottle cooler & merch to the rear. Slight deck out back for the going outside, a handful of tables there.

11 beers up at current (Hazy Daisy, NE IPA, 5.5%; Yotus IPA, West Coast IPA, 6.7%; Saddle Creek, Wheat, 4.6%; Dos Amigos, Mexican Style Lager, 4.9%; Petal Pusher, Hibiscus Ale with Cranberry, 5.3%; Nutjob Brown, Brown Ale, 4.6%; Big Jim Pivo, Tamave, 5.5%; Heilige Namen, aka, Fall Fest, 5.1%; Muddy Mo Amber Ale, ESB, 4.8%; Belgian Curve, Belgian Pale Ale, 5.4%; Mein Schatzi Adambier, Barleywine, 8.2%), being that 3 others (Goatsmack Helles Bock, 6.5%; Honey Lager, 6.1%; 7’s Czech Pils, 5.1%) had selfishly kicked. And a guest cider, too (Saro Cider). Interesting list. Who makes an Adambier?

Tightish in time, I did a sampler of 4 served on a paddle (Muddy Mo Amber ESB, just didn’t come across to style; Nutjob Brown Ale, light body, some nuttiness to it; Heilige Namen Fall Fest, lacks the malt I want in a Fest; Yotus IPA, West Coast IPA, crisp, citrus, okay, this one was good. I felt the beers were just so-so overall. Maybe, I don’t know, are they an extract brewery? Something seemed off. I’m kind of surprised as I’d heard some good things and they’ve been at it for a while, I could have just caught an off night.

Anyway, good crowd. I’m talking with a lovely couple from Sioux Falls new in town. Would have liked to have gotten into the list a bit further (I'm talking to you, Adambier, and you too, Pivo) but closing time calls. I’ll hit ‘em again when I’m through, is all. Chill house, and damn them dumplings smell a-mazing!

I visited Scriptown Brewing a few weeks back when I was passing through Omaha. The taproom space is all brick and wood and darkness. Has a very well-lived-in feel, with friendly service up at the bar.

When I visited, they had 11 of their own beers on tap, plus cider, seltzer and booze. There was only one IPA, but lots of interesting lagers including a helles bock and a Czech pils; a brown, a wheat, an even an adambier (now that you don't see everyday!). The Nutjob Brown and helles bock were both good exemplars of the style, and the other beers I tried were quite good as well. I'm not super familiar with adambier as a style but it was very much like a "German barleywine" to my taste, and I was happy they had something so unusual on tap. I'm pretty impressed by Scriptown overall!

I think I found my favorite brewer in Omaha, NE...

Maybe it was the very inviting rustic decor, or maybe it was the very entertaining and educational conversation with the owners, or maybe it’s just that the beer I choose to try was plain good, but something left a very nice impression.

The location is at one far end of the Omaha Blackstone district, and the wood decor all around I find inviting and friendly. The owners were super friendly and when they learned I started home brewing myself were very forthcoming with tips and tricks.

The beers I had - a dunkel and a lager - were really drinkable and super good. I really can’t say enough if my experience. Hopefully someday I can return.

Speaking of their beers - what sets them aside is their, what I will call, ‘old school’ attitude. None of what they offer is fruity. All of it is European in nature, clear, and very tasty. In this age of “mango pineapple IPAs”, this was a refreshing experience.

Nice atmosphere to come catch a drink in. No games and a few TVs to watch. It’s usually dimly lit and darker than most places you’d normally go to drink at. Quality beer and have always had good service from the bar!

this place is awesome, a really cool old brick building that used to house a grocery store among other things from what i gather. exposed brick all over the place, some reclaimed wood features, brewhouse down below in the back, visible through a large window there, wrap around bar, cozy atmosphere, minimalist decor, simple but upscale sort of feeling, very welcoming. dudes behind the bar were great, and even got to chat to a brewer, who was both knowledgeable and humble, but happy to chat about his craft. awesome folks behind this operation no doubt. they had something like eight or nine beers flowing, all of which were great, at least the ones i had. they have a rotating series of coffee beers they call ups and downs, done with coffee from right next door. i had a belgian ipa with coffee that was absolutely awesome, and their yotus ipa was also delicious. a good mix of innovation and classic styles in here, all quite well executed. such a cool place to come check out, a very different sort of vibe than most other taprooms, and really great beer. this was easily my favorite of the omaha breweries i have visited!

Our experience at Scriptown was not good, not good at all. The service was the worst we've ever had at a brewery. After waiting for 30 minutes in a half full tap room, the beers were average at best. We did account for the fact that they had recently opened, and we may be back if they are still open in a few years. I do not recommend.

Vibe - WOW what a beautiful bar. amazing design and feel to this place.
Quality - I enjoyed the beers I had quite a bit.
Service - huge bar in the middle which blocked the view, but very friendly staff.
Selection - SESSION beers are their thing, but I enjoyed what I had.

Overall I would definitely go back. Wish they offered more than just session beers, but I thought the variety of sessions was great.
