In the distant past, the Slavs revered the inflammatory and merry God of the sun of Jarila. They believed in his ability to awaken the inner strength of man and fill with the joy of life. Today, our everyday life revives the kvass "Yarilo", each breath of which greatly invigorates and quenches thirst. The product of live fermentation on the basis of grain crops used traditionally for the preparation of kvass, "Jarilo" has a rich bread taste and a pleasant aroma. It perfectly refreshes and quickly gives a sense of recovery of vitality.

A thanks to the Czar of the Kvass kick, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a large, brown plastic bottle. Has a cola color with no head at all. Smell is of dark breads. Taste is bready, just a touch of sourness. Feels light bodied in the mouth and overall is a mediocre beer.

All of a sudden, the Kvass Kick is back up an running, Kamarades! There were three (3) of us who were hardcore for a while ( @TMoney , @NeroFiddled & @woodychandler ) until @UCLABrewN84 raised the question as to whether Kvass was worthy of or even merited inclusion. 8=( The wind left my sails as the debate protracted & I simply moved on. Time has borne me out & Kvass has a solid place on this site! Happy happy joy joy! Which brings me to my current, renewed interest. I took some Kvass to a monthly bottle share last Saturday & while it was not wildly received, it was still pooh-poohed by some attendees! 8={} I ALREADY fought in this battle & won! Now, I am simply drinking the fruits of my success in advance of tomorrow's visit from @tone77 who will get halvsies of everything from yesterday & today.

From the Bottle: "ЯРИЛО СПРАВЖНыЙ Квас".

I unscrewed the plastic cap from the plastic bottle (!) 8=( & began a slow C-Line pour into my awaiting Saint-Petersburg souvenir glass, procured a few weeks ago at Otterbein Church's monthly Attic Treasures rummage sale. It was still another still Kvass, evincing no carbonation nor producing any head. Fine by me as I charged my glass up to the rim! More for me.

This one is quite interesting. It seems that Yarilo is a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola Company! I knew that they were behind "Nikola (NOT Cola)" in Mother Russia, but this one is Ukrainian. In PHL, they have the Ukie (yoo-key) Club & I must get Bill & Nancy Barton to take me sometime.

Onward! Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with cola highlights. Nose was a return to the more traditional sharpness of rye, treacle & baker's chocolate. Mmm. As long as it does not have that cloying sweetness of iced tea, I am solid. Mouthfeel was the usual thin, but not downright watery, gruel that I have become accustomed to drinking. Oh well. The taste was not quite Baby Bear's just right, but pretty close. The sharp bitterness of treacle was held in check while the sour pepperiness of rye gave it a pleasant dryness while the chocolaty aspect lent it a bittersweet quality. This was in the traditional range while not being in-your-face traditional (think Moskvas' Classic(al) or Afanasy's Barrel Kvass). Those two were tough, even for me! This was approachable from a Western standpoint. Finish was dry & quite refreshing. That is the point, in case you missed it. Kvass is intended as a summertime thirst quencher, sold out of taps on the sides of water buffaloes on the street. I have added the experience to my bucket list. YMMV.

KVASS! Mother Russia’s favourite beverage, more popular than Coke and Pepsi combined, in fact Yarilo Kvass (which is actually brewed in the Ukraine) is so popular a brand that Coca-Cola™ bought the entire company. I recently seized the opportunity to buy a 2L PET bottle of this stuff when I was in Brisbane visiting my Brisbanian peeps and it dawned on me, as you’ll soon find out, why the comparisons to Coke/Pepsi are so very astute. Anyway enough talk of Kvass, in Russia Kvass-time is everytime! Note: This stuff is so low in ABV (1.5%) that even kids are allowed to drink it... it would take a couple litres to get even close to tipsy with this stuff.

Poured from a 2L PET bottle into a Peroni stange.

A: Clear cola coloured body with a tan head that dissipates quickly leaving behind a beverage that looks an awful lot like Coke™. The carbonation bubbles are big and reminiscent of a soft-drink. At this stage I’m not sure what to expect or how to score it as this is my first Kvass... I’ll go with a cryptic 7/10.

S: BIG stale sourdough/rye bread note with a slight date and raisin tingle. Soft-drink sugars linger on in the background. The staleness of the bread character really stands out as something not ordinarily experienced in any brew, and for some people (people I know) it’s a real turn off... but I am with it, Kvass-style! 6/10.

T: An interesting melange of stale sourdough/rye bread, hints of cane sugar and a light sweet date/raisin touch. Overall the sour notes come out on top but it balances out as an easy to drink bread/dark fruit flavoured soft-drink. Again I’m not sure if Kvass is supposed to taste like a soft-drink but this one does. 7/10.

M: Light bodied with a big bubble fizzy carbonation - it’s Russian (no Ukrainian!) Coke... as a regular drinker of big/thick beers it feels like this could definitely benefit from a bit more body. 5/10.

D: This is actually a lot better than I expected it to be - when you think of the fact that it comes from stale bread and it actually doesn’t taste shit I’m certainly impressed. The flavour really grew on me and I could see knocking a big chilled glass of this in the middle of summer. No wonder this is more popular than Coke/Pepsi in Russia and it comes with the added bonus of a miniscule amount of alcohol, I’m sold, these Russians have the right idea: “Let us find way to put booze in soft-drink da?” Mission accomplished Russia. 7/10.

Food match: In Russia food matches YOU [come on, you knew I was going to say that].
