Batch No. 1731 is a 100% Brettanomyces-fermented hoppy session ale created by homebrewer Kevin Osborne of Los Angeles. When we judged through all of our competition entries, his complex yet quaffable creation shouted WINNER! (as well as tropical!, funky! and dry!). It puts El Dorado, Mosaic and Chinook hops on a pedestal as much as one possibly could.

Golden color. Huge, white head. Barnyard, fruits, and some hops in the aroma. Dry, funky taste with moderate bitterness and astringent finish. Decent.

I dunno who brought this over (leaning towards bonerhog), but it was the rare occasion that it was someone else, not myself who doth brought Bruery libations.

Pours an amber color leaning to the dark side. 3/4" white head. Good retention. Cool aroma, hit both the major Mosaic and Chinook hop notes (tropical and pine) but also had a fresh brett aspect to it, like some freshly stamped leather or branded cows.

I was surprised how much this was a good tasting hoppy beer. All those OG years, it was like the Bruery tried to hard to avoid making that commercially viable style. But here you got that nice mix that few brewers do, hitttin' up Mosaic and Chinook together alongside a body that pushes a conflicting crisp leather, barn and mushroom like effervescent body. Quite the interesting beer and definitely exceeded my expectations. Kind of made me wish I had the opportunity to try the others from this series (when they were fresh).

2016 bottle (the only vintage, I think?) poured into a teku glass, and the foam builds quickly and forms a very large off white head that comes out of the top of the glass beautifully, and the head falls very slowly and leaves loads of lacing. The head gives you a huge aroma of funky Brett that comes off almost like mushrooms, and you also pick up on the very fruity hops. Taste follows almost exactly. Funk forward for sure, but the fruity and very, very floral hop character is still very present on the tongue and works beautifully with the funk. A nice dry finish, light body, and lively carbonation really pulls the beer together amazingly. Overall, this is an absolutely perfect beer for me. The flavors and aromas come together like a symphony. I almost don't understand the lower ratings/reviews, but I guess like many things, beers are very subjective.

L: hazy orange color, big white foamy head, great retention, sticky lacing.
S: Belgian yeast, herbal, floral.
T: herbal, floral, spicy, lemon, Belgian yeast, medium amount of bitterness, nice dryness. No barnyard/horse blanket, more sourness was expected. Taste like a Belgian Orval.
F: light body with high lively carbonation.
O: bright, solid, very smooth and refreshing to drink.

Poured from the bottle into a goblet. 12/04/15 etched on the side.

Pours a light copper color with a white frothy head that lingers on forever. 5 minutes in and I've sipped a few times, but the head actually stays almost like a cappuccino with foam sticking to the sides. Beautiful lacing all around the glass as I sip.

Smells funky! Definitely some brettanomyces in there (it also states that on the label) and I also get some nice grassy notes with perhaps some kaffir lime peel. there's almost a musky scent detected as well.

Tastes initially hoppy and and bitey, but smoothed out with a nice dryness. The tounge is left feeling like the Sahara desert. Interesting balance.

Mouthfeel is dry and prickly on the toungue with a crisp, dry finish that lingers on.

Overall a solid funky brew! The balance of malt vs hops is a bit off I think but for this style it can taste this way. I would get this again to try and would like to see if it progresses in the bottle.

2016 vintage. Bottle from WOB.

Pours slightly hazy orange in color with a nice fluffy white head.

Aroma screams Brett. Horse blanket, funk, leather, and dirty gym socks. Some lemon notes and floral hops.

Taste is dry and funky. The hoppiness is floral with very light amounts of citrus. A long lingering aftertaste brings up notes like crushed aspirin. More leather is definitely present.

Overall, this beer is just too brettanomyces-forward for my liking. It totally took over the beer, which detracted all notes from the underlying style. I see it pairing well with a Calabrese and hard salami sandwich. It gets a 75.5/100.
