It's time for the third wave - a beer that awakens the senses from first sniff to first sip. This sour, blended ale folds our sour, oak-aged Belgian style quadrupel with blackberries into our malt-forward, bourbon barrel-aged old ale, and finishes with a Flemish good morning kiss, for an awakening, robust and sweet & sour twist. It's complimented and balanced by the gentle, roasty character imparted from freshly roasted coffee from our friend's at Portolo Coffee Lab - a blend that was specifically selected for this complex, sour coffee ale, and a concept that was nearly a year in the making.

Split with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black with a thin off white head that fades to leave light wisps and a thin blanket.

S - Aromas of old timey soda jerk spices. Like someone tried to make doctor pepper with stuff in their cabinet.

T - Taste is tart vinegar, acrid coffee, maybe some berry syrup. There is soft herbal note that is incredibly awful.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, almost slimy.

O - Overall this was an absolute mess of a beer. Just hideous drain pour

Light foamy bubbly 1/2 finger head that fades at a quicker pace, little lacing, decent legs, pretty much black beer

Nose is just terrible, i don't even know where to go, malt vinegar, weird Dr Pepper cola thing, dirt soil sweet sugar alcohol rummy thing, nutty too like vinegar habanero peanuts and spices

Taste sweet syrupy sugary mess and then bleh, just horrendous, undrinkable, so bad I would rather drink my own fermented bile, I think there is some berry syrup, and coffee notes, more Dr pepper sassafras cola thing, Mr Pib maybe I don;t know but just horrible
Mouth is syrupy diabeetus sweet, fizzy carb, little alcohol

Overall just terrible, one of the worst beers I've had in a while

Bottle from Adam, thanks. Hazy brown black with a thin off white head. Huge coffee on the nose with hints of lactic cherry tartness. Yeah that’s turned

750mL bottle acquired through The Bruery's Society. Bottled 9/22/16. Served in a Bruery snifter.

Pours a deep, opaque magenta with a finger and a half cap of ecrue froth. The head fades slowly to a hazy blanket and a wide crown that imparts a scattered dusting of tiny dots of lace.

Smells of coffee, tart berries, an oaky sweetness and some faint chocolate.

A strange melange attacks the palate. It is a sweet and sour mix of sour coffee, earthy tart blackberries, caramel, traces of bourbon, wet wood, fruit skins, cocoa and some whispers of alcohol. An original blend of flavors for sure.

Full body with subtle yet present carbonation. Coffee, tart blackberries and wet oak in the finish.

Derde Golf is more fascinating blending work from The Bruery. The unique blend of sweet, sour, coffee and blackberry is unlike anything else I've had.

L - Pours a muddled, flat coke colored body with a half finger light khaki head.

S - An abundance of coffee on the nose that just dominates. It's hard for me to really pick out anything past the coffee. Hints of sour with some oak. May'be some old ale toffee. The bourbon characteristics are very minimal. This is unbalanced, but I'm really liking the coffee!

T - Blackberry tartness up front that develops into a jammy quality on the finish. Coffee comes on midway through along with the oak and sweet aspects of bourbon old ale. The bourbon old ale is pairing brilliantly with the sour ale as well as the coffee.

F - Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Somewhat dry finish.

O - I didn't think the sour blackberry ale, coffee and BBA old ale would work, but they do!

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep mahogany topped by a dense finger and a half of dense light tan head that quickly fades to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of coffee with some currants and sourness with some hints of caramel and oak
T: Taste is tart up front with some currants followed by the coffee with some caramel and oak with some hints of vanilla. Coffee comes back in and does battle with the acidity. The swallow brings more coffee and sourness along with some currants, oak, and spice with a little caramel and vanilla. Sour coffee notes linger the longest
M: This beer has a medium mouthfeel that is a little slick and oily with slightly prickly carbonation and a dry finish from the acidity
O: Overall this is an interesting blend. It's good but it's certainly not for everyone. This is a beer that you need to go into with an open mind. I have a few more of these so it will be interesting to see how it changes in the bottle as the coffee fades.
