Collaboration with Industrial Arts Brewing

Citrus Rhine'd, is a strong Pale Ale brewed aggressively with Mandarina Bavaria hops and finished with a blended specialty Brett yeast strain. It is intense with notes of tangerine, lemon, and citrus. Bob & Ruby brewed this beer in collaboration with Chief from Industrial Arts Brewing. Brewed for the fourth year, but first time released in cans!

A thanks to the commander of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a very hazy orange color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is full of citrus. Taste is of oranges,v tangerines, slightly tart, dry at the finish. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer.

2SP Brewing Co. / Industrial Arts "Citrus Rhine'd"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 05/14/19 10:59 739-742"
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: "HOPPED HEAVILY WITH MANDARINA BAVARIA" - one of my favorite hops! It's poured a cloudy golden body with a bit of an orange sheen beneath a finger-plus thick head of fairly dense white foam. Not a lot of aroma going on here but this is an old sample. I feel like I'm getting more peach than orange which is weird because Mandarina Bavaria gives you orange - that's why it's called Mandarina. There is orange there but I'm still really getting that peach. Additionally, there's a bit of an actual yeast aroma. OK, on to the flavor... well, damn, I'm getting the peach there as well. There is orange, and there's some other stuff going on, some papaya, a touch of citrus pith, and maybe some underlying melon but it's basically peach and orange. This is also finished with Brettanomyces, and you get a hint of that, just a hint. I'd call it leather, maybe subtly metallic, and a little like wet straw. Ehhhhh, maybe there is a very subtle hint of "barnyard" as well. In the end it's just a light touch of Brett. I wonder if you let it sit what might happen though. This is pretty old already though. Let me figure it out... oh, I'm wrong, sorry, this is only 4 months old. Well, damn, maybe I should run out and buy some more! OK, back to the beer itself. It's nicely balanced with a moderate to median bitterness. It's a touch sweetish, but that works for what I think they're going for here, which is like a "juicy" New England Style IPA. The can I have says it's 6.9% but the BA website says it's 6.0% - I dunno, either works for me. OK, back to the malt, it seems like 100% pilsner malt but I could be wrong. It's basic though, and sweetish, supporting the hops all the way. In the mouth it's medium and gently crisp then smooth due to all of the residual proteins. The head has held from the start which is pretty impressive, and I've still got a thin but completely solid surface covering. The lacing is OK, but not great. So what do I think about this guy in the end? Despite the peach and orange debate (or maybe there's no debate and I'm just off a bit), I feel it is a bit one-sided. The Brett doesn't seem to help that really, and there's that bit of actual yeast note that to me is distracting. Me no like-O. Of course it's not really that bad, if this were just a pint out at the bar or after work before dinner it probably wouldn't be that much of an issue but as I've got it under the microscope right now it's right there. The lacing could be better; I'll just let the numbers fall where they fall.

The CANQuest (tm) is back for New Tying Up Loose Ends Beer Sunday, Redux (Week 760)! This one takes us back, in the TARDIS, to Week 752.

From the CAN: "A Strong Pale Ale Collaboration"; "Hopped Heavy with Mandarina Bavaria"; "Everything We CAN't Drink, We CAN".

I stopped in at the Friendly Greek Bottle Shop (FGBS) on Friday night, ostensibly as a prelim to the McCaskey HS football game that night, but it also gave me a ChANce to scour the coolers & shelves. I am buying a LOT less since sifting through the backlog this Summer, but #FOMO remains strong. I bought this & the previous Fuzzy Math since I already had two (2) 2SP CANs earmarked for today.

I was very curious to try this APA brewed with Brett. In order to do so, I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I watched with rapt fascination as it foamed up of its own volition to form two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with excellent retention. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose smelled strongly of tangerine! Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but def big for the style. The taste beCAN with an explosion of sweet tangerine, giving 'way to a lemony citrus when suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, the funk of Brett CANnounced its arrival. I remember, as a novice on here (literally) decades ago, I asked @NeroFiddled about Brett & he was the one that caused the scales to fall from mine eyes. I have had it used in beers from a level where it was front & center to ones like this, where it kind of brings up the rear while really drying things out. Its funkiness was subtle in this one, but it certainly led to a dry finish. It was an interesting brew, to be sure, but one was satiating for me. YMMV.

Canned 5-14-19
L: Light copper color, mild haze, standard head with light lacing.
S: Tangerine is prevalent, fresh dank aroma is quite refreshing.
T: Heavy citrus, with a blush of spicy tropical on the backside. Sweet.
F: Fairly bitter, mild carbonation, late prickly MF that hangs in.
O: At 1.5 months old, I tasted no hop loss, or malt intrusion. A tasty beer, a little on the light side.. but it's a PA!

Pouring from a 16 oz. can into a snulip glass, this beer pours out completely hazy and a deep, dull shade of orange. It forms a pinky width of tightly packed, off yellow bubbles to sit as the crown.

The nose brings an almost sharp citrus. Big oranges, some pineapple.

The taste carries in much of the same way. Comes in with an almost orange juice/sunny d type presence; somewhat tangy. Dry with no real ABV burn or hop burn, just some of that citrus sharpness.

Overall, it’s not bad. I just don’t go crazy over the sharp citrus type aspects that I’m picking up in it.

Twice poured by the bartender due to the foaminess. Thick lasting head. Cloudy, dark gold color. Thick ring lace after each sip.

Fresh cirrus rind hop nose. More floral than zesty.

The taste is more rooted in bitterness than the smell would lead one to expect. Decent pale malt start but the hop comes on strong and quickly. Solid body with moderate carbonation. Overall, this is a dry with a mildly black pepper-like bitterness.

Nice bitter hop note to balance the flavor. Hazy Looking . Little head that dissipate quickly. A little bit of lacing. There is slight banana note in the middle. Bitter hops on the finish. A good amount of carbonation.
