Working with our neighbors at Wawa, we brewed an oatmeal stout steeped with their Reserve Winter Blend Coffee. This is an exclusive blend that was handpicked by Wawa's World Traveling Coffee Guru Michael McLaughlin, who sought to make a coffee with flavors of sweet clove, dark chocolate, and graham crackers perfect for the winter months. Our head brewer, Bob Barrar, who, like Wawa, is a Delaware County native chose to steep the beans in an oatmeal stout, a style that has a balanced sweetness to showcase the full range of flavors of the coffee.

Exclusive for the Philly 5-County region, cans of Winter Reserve Coffee Stout will be available early December.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Dark, dark brown pour... nearly black with 2 fingers of creamy tan head. Great ring of lacing.

S: Coffee... mixed with coffee and topped with coffee. Wawa Coffee.

T.F: Semi-sweet up front. Roasted grains and sugars. Strong coffee. Dark chocolate, a bit of baked raisin, and charred marshmallow. Medium bodied. Smooth mouthfeel... a bit of cream at the finish with more espresso.

O: A solid (and very coffee forward) stout. Good flavor and drinkability. I owe my buddy for grabbing me one.

2SP Brewing Co. "Winter Reserve Coffee Stout"
16 fl. oz. can; the coding is illegible
$2.99 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Typical appearance: opaque black body beneath a finger's width of creamy tan foam. The aroma is reminiscent of fresh, oily coffee beans with a touch of spiciness (from the coffee) and some chocolate behind. It's not the brightest coffee aroma but it's pretty nice. The flavor brings out more of that spiciness the coffee brings with it, and I can see why aged versions of coffee beers get that green pepper character. It's a little acidic as well, kind of like what you'd find in a cup of black coffee. There's the expected roastiness of course, and some dark chocolate as well. There's not a lot of yeast character to it, which is probably planned to allow the coffee to come through more on its own - no problems there. I'm not finding any hops, maybe just a little at the back, but I'm not expecting that either in an oatmeal stout. Having said that, the bitterness is fairly restrained as well. It leaves some sweetness but that works with the acidity from the dark malts and coffee as well and it's completely balanced in the end. It's smooth in the mouth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. Overall it's really quite nice. The coffee itself is pretty interesting and I'm inspired to go grab a cup, and I think that, combined with the great balance that they've achieved really makes it work. Well worth seeking out.

Pours jet black with a creamy/foamy mocha colored head. Smell is somewhat muted, mild vanilla, coffee notes. Taste coffee, creamy caramel, mild cocoa. Feels very creamy and smooth, almost like a coffee latte or something similar.Medium bodied finishes juicy.A bit chewy for a an American Stout. Almost too much coffee flavor. Overall a great coffee stout if you really like coffee, otherwise the coffee is too up front. I chuckled when I saw WAWA beer. Overall a worthwhile stout. This beer is super limited. My state was not supposed to get any.
