16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single for $3.99. Canned on 8/20/2020, so this is almost 6 weeks old.
Look: Very hazy with a bright orange core, a little paler on the edges. Barely translucent. Poured with a decent sized head that has reduced to a thin layer of compact, frothy off-white bubbles.
Smell: An interesting nose that has a good mixture of juicy stone fruit and dank, green notes. Smells both tangy and green. I get notes of unripe mango and papaya with some dankness, almost medicinal notes on the back end. It smells like this may be both juicy and green/bitter.
Taste: A bit surprised by the taste. Based on the appearance and nose, I was expecting some juiciness up front. Instead there is almost none. Up front, there is some tropical fruitiness, and then there is a big, bitter and astringent finish that leaves you with some fruitiness and a mouth full of green, herbal notes that linger long. Kind of tastes like a mango flavored eucalyptus leaf. I just wonder if I would have preferred a cleaner version of this beer that was more crisp and was made without the haze...
Feel: The mouthfeel is soft and creamy with medium body.
Overall: This is interesting. It's definitely well-made and a different offering from what has become ubiquitous in the beer market. If you are interested in the tropical fruitiness that a NEIPA offers, but you don't want the sweetness or juiciness that comes with it, then this is the beer for you. For 6.7% ABV, it packs in a lot of flavor. It looks like a NEIPA, but it's not. It is correctly classified as an American IPA. Personally this isn't my favorite take on IPA, but I appreciate the creativity and I am glad to have tried this one.
From the can: Made with New Zealand hops. Rakau, Motueka. Fruity, Robust.
