Quy (batch 3) is an Imperial Stout brewed in loving memory of our friend Quy Phuoc Pham. Quy was a pillar of the Richmond beer community and we honor him every year with his own special blended barrel-aged Imperial Stout. This years version is a blend of 26-month-old double barrel-aged Imperial Stout, 22-month-old bourbon Imperial Chocolate Milk Stout, and 23-month-old South American Imperial Stout conditioned on raw coconut, coconut cream, maple syrup, marshmallow, and honey. 100% of the proceeds go directly to Quy’s family - his wife Suong and his two children My and Vy. Tastes like liquid S’mores pop tarts and delicious German chocolate cake.

Write up, on tap at The Veil. It pours like literal motor oil without any head. The aroma is extremely assertive with the coconut and marshmallow qualities, though I'm a little disappointed in the mild barrel notes. Maple seems to get placed on the back burner; otherwise the nose is nearly spot-on for a monster dessert stout. But drinking it is another thing entirely. It is literally the sweetest beer I've ever drank! Though coconut and marshmallow are the dominant flavors like I expected, there isn't much maple presence given the crushing sweetness. The two barrel-aged stouts in this blend seem to get lost in translation, leaving a monstrously sugary finish with little depth (but perfectly concealed alcohol). Pity. On the other hand, the mouthfeel is appropriate - oily, viscous, and thick in texture. Carbonation is low, as expected. I really wanted more oak tannins to come through and help cleanse the palate ever so slightly. I love the cause, I love the intentions, I do not like how this beer tastes. Plain and simple.
RIP Quy.

THICCCC pour. Loads of raw coconut flakes. Nose is excellent; coconut, vanilla, honey, & good barrel on the tail. The palate is cloyingly sweet & syrupy, heavy on honey. Vanilla & very slight barrel as it warms. Very good, but wish it wasn’t so sweet! That said, an amazing cause. RIP Quy.
