There's good and not so good impressions after emptying the entire contents of a pint can into a clear glass liter mug. What's good is the moderately hazy copper-amber color of the liquid. What's not so good is the stark white foam that takes up one third of the vessel, although it recedes quickly and evenly, leaving a modest head without glass lacing. For the nose, there's a mixture of starches, hops, yeast and alcohol to be had, without any discernable definition to any. The first impression is the softness of the initial mouthfeel, then it's the alcohol burn that follows. This is West Coast style by self description because it's not muddled by extra wheat and/or oats in the wort. They may be there, but not enough to make a positive influence on the taste, nor the overall mouthfeel. There's some toffee sweetness and some bitter hops to taste, but this drinks more like an Imperial Malt Liquor, should one exist, than anything else. The hoppily bitterness of a West Coast IPA can be well appreciated, so that's not the problem here. It's the harshness of the alcohol bite that turns this from a thumbs up, to an marginal thumbs down.
