Hazy purple-brown color. Pours a short tan head that dropped back to a thin skiff after a minute. High flow of tiny bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Only left a couple of dots of lacing.
Sour funk and a strong blueberry scent that blended well with the funk. A light yeast and malt scent formed the base. Swirling the glass boosted the funk into a light barnyard that disappears after a quick sniff.
Starts off with a bitter coffee flavor. Both sweet and tart kick in and the flavor opens up to a light blueberry and black pepper. There is a hint of vanilla that smooths out the flavor while remaining mostly hidden. The aftertaste has a quick burst of blueberry which gives way to a tart bitterness. The bitters taste more like knapweed than hops. It seems more bitter than the 24.5 IBUs listed on the label.
Quite foamy, but it never quite gets to a creamy feel. Medium body.
Very unusual sweep of scents and flavors. Just about anything funky and tart can be lumped into a Saison style, however this pursued other styles down alleyways to beat them unconcious and rifle their pockets for odd smells and flavors. Still, they all fit together into a coherent whole; the blueberry and the funk are almost a single, larger scent/flavor. The only negative is the bitters that have that back of the mouth taste of walking through a field of knapweed and inhaling the dust that gets brushed off. The bitters work with the initial coffee flavor, but take over too much of the aftertaste.
