On nitro tap at the brewery taproom in Media.
Durable tan head over a black body
Creamy smooth body feels much lighter than the regular version.
Lingering, mildly bitter, black coffee flavor.
Also tried the 'regular' version of Pata Negra:
Essentially black body with a decent head.
Loads of very dark roasted grain flavors with light smoke and moderate black coffee shining in the finish.
Ligth carbonation in a relatively (for style) full body. Smooth.
Overall: well crafted version of style.

Sterling Pig Brewery "Pata Negra"
on tap @ The 19th Annual Manayunk Craft Beer Festival
Notes: Beautiful schwarzbier! Clean, rich but not overdone, balanced. Brown-black body beneath an off-white head. The aroma is gently malty with notes of chocolate and caramel. The flavor follows with additional cocoa, nuts, dark chocolate, and subtle coffee. There are some herbal and a touch spicy hops present in the background, not really stepping forward until the mild but noticeably roasty finish. Balanced by a moderate hop bitterness. Medium bodied with a slightly lower than standard carbonation level. Really nicely done! The only thing that's odd is the name. I'd originally thought it was "plata negra", which kind of makes sense - "black silver", but I was mistaken, it's actually "pata negra" which means "black leg"... ? I'm not sure what that's about and I'm not going to go there ;) I'm kidding, they're probably referring to the pig's hoof which would also be "pata".

Took a growler home after a visit to the brewpub last Saturday. Pours what seems to be black. When held up to the light, it's more of a dark brown that's clear. Smells of coffee roast, chocolate, and cigarette ash. A little too much roast, in my opinion, for a schwarzbier. Tastes very clean with notes of coffee, chocolate, bready toast, - nicely brewed. Hops aren't noticeable in aroma or taste. Bitterness is low but the roasted malts leaves a little too much astringency. Light to medium bodied that's easily drinkable. Pairs well with pizza with slightly burnt crust. Overall, this would make an excellent stout as the roast qualities are definitely there. For a schwarzbier, I'd prefer to see a little less coffee & roast to let the munich malts shine through more. With some age or more lagering, I'd bet this one would round out nicely.
