Purchased at the market in Philadelphia, 12/18/23. No ABV on the pint can. Poured into my trusty Hofbrau Haus pint mug.
Look: nice, opaque stout. A coating of foam lasts throughout so my guess was the ABV isn't what I'd usually like in a heavy stout like this. Nothing in the lacing indicates cherries, though, and that's not cool.
Smell: all of the notes of an oatmeal stout are there. Roasted barley malt. Not really getting much on the chocolate and definitely little, if any, cherry.
Taste: follows the nose. If I wanted an oatmeal stout or a marginally chocolate-oatmeal stout, I would have purchased that. Solid stout, for sure. Maybe a hint of cherries somewhere in that unpleasant bitterness. But not what was advertised.
Feel: nice for what it is. Nothing bad to say here. Nothing stellar either.
I just think this is overall a failure. It's a good beer, don't get me wrong. If it was sold as "just" a stout, I probably would have rated it higher. But "dark cherry" is in the name and it should be reviewed based on that. Given that, a less sympathetic reviewer would have given straight threes. Or less.
I note with not a little aggravation that the brewer's website features nothing but bitter, overly hopped beers aside from this and a Belgian I know I wouldn't enjoy. I guess we're still not finished with the hop fetish.

The contents of a pint can completely emptied into a clear glass liter mug shows a typical Stout. There's a modest dark biege/light tan head on top of a black coffee brown liquid. There's not much cherry within the aroma and what's there might be by influence of the name. The roasted barley is there, with vague hop influences, but even that is less than pronounced. Unfortunately, that's how it drinks. Are there any dark cherries in here at all? If so, it's a mild contribution. That's the biggest disappointment, as it's not a bad Stout. It has plenty of roasted bitterness and a little more from the hops. The mouthfeel is at least acceptable for this style, AVB and hopping, but no more. The glass lacing is scant and the head less than enduring. But, the consummate question is, "Where's the cherry?".
