Sterling Pig Brewery "Krampus’ Cranny Wit"
12 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$2.33 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: The label says that this is brewed with cranberry & orange, and nowhere do I see anything about "natural flavors". It's poured a hazy deep peach colored body beneath a short head of creamy white foam. The aroma is sweetish, fruity, a touch phenolic and spicy, and kind of like fruit pulp if that makes any sense. I might be imagining that but there's definitely something there. On to the taste - it's much fuller, far more sweet, fruity, and phenolic with Belgian yeast character, and there's a light bit of tartness to it. It's unique in my book as I can't remember ever having tasted a beer exactly like this. Is what I was thinking of as fruit pulp actually coriander seed? I think so, because now that it's warmed a bit I'm getting more of that. It's woody, and a touch spicy. It's not that bitter but the spiciness from the yeast and coriander seed (spices are not mentioned on the label) along with its light tartness balance the sweetish malt and leave it dry, fruity, and spicy & earthy in the finish. In the mouth it's medium bodied with a lightly zesty, fine-bubbled carbonation. It's delicate and easy to drink, but also surprisingly complex and I find it hard to put it down. I could drink this all night long, at least until Krampus showed up and beat my ass, so, note to self, never drink this on December 5th as that's the night that Krampus punishes the naughty children.
