L- Inky black, even with a halogen behind it. Poured with a 2mm tan head but that didn't last more than 5 seconds; the ABV at 9.5% is probably too high to sustain it.
S- 'It ponged of cocoa' even on the pour. A more considered sniff later reveals major cocoa plus a minor liquor-ish suggestion in the tail.
T- Major cocoa, intense, with a richness, nutty, big depth, but some deep notes brushing heavily of my palate. The latter appear to mostly liquor based, or liquor feeling. Is this barrel aged in brandy casks... ?
F- It's very deep, superb depths of cocoa yet the liquor/? edge brings balance. It also has a richness to it, which if it warmed might become sweet, yet chilled, that liquor/? facet balances it out.
O- An interesting beer, I've had big stouts with meaty ABV% like this before that similarly manage to find balance. I haven't read the can yet and look forward to seeing quite what the ingredients are.
440ml crafty can Bought from TremblingMadness/York for home delivery as part of a big DIY-pick mixed case or two.
BB: 30/06/2021.
Ps, now reading can: ingredients include: Hazlenut essence, sugar, cocoa nibs and vanilla pods. So keep that in mind when you find all of those notes in this beer. I was going to rate this 4 Overall, but am lowering that to 3 since most key facets are non-standard added ingredients.
