Built on local Indiana folklore, the brewers at Central State devise an ale from fruit, grain, wild yeast and a local mindset for a blueberry ale that's much more than cereal fruit.
House of Blue Lights pours a rather foggy mauve with a billowing off-white cap that quickly folds back into the acidity within the beer, but first leaving a host of berry and earthen perfume in its wake. With the initial taste being unmistakable of blueberry, nuances of red wine, biscuit and citrus act in balancing support.
And as the sweetness calmly relaxes across the middle palate, its cobbler-like brightness develops into a tart, tangy and taffy-like taste with a light peppery pectin bite and a bright acidity of wine to round out the taste. Raw grain and subtle hops give the taste a final frame with gentle wafts of burlap and cork playing a role in the beer's after palate.
Medium-light on the palate, the fruit and yeast acidity breaks up the malt and faint residual sweetness well after the carbonic bite of effervescence lifts early into the session. Its light tannic bite and playful citrus bitterness ensures a crisp, clean and refreshing taste with a Belgian-esque powdery twist.
