Collaboration with Other Half Brewing Co.

Dry-hopped Saison

When approaching a collab with our friends at Other Half Brewing we wanted to combine the things we loved about each other's breweries. We crafted this beer as a result. Funky and dry thanks to Central States yeast cultures. Yet lush and hoppy from the use of lots of flaked oats and a healthy dose of Citra, Mandarina, and Blanc dry hops from the Other Half side. This beer is humble and proud at the same time.

I BELIEVE IT IS THE FLAKED OATS THAT GIVES THIS BEER A SLIGHT SWEET TASTE - VERY REFRESHING

16oz can, served in a snifter glass. Pour is hazy bright straw yellow in colour, one finger white head, good retention. Smell is citrus, grapefruit, orange and a bit of grain, touch of mineral and hay, some caramel sweetness. In fact, this made me ask if this was actually an IPA rather than a saison. That translates onto the flavour, mostly hoppy citrus and grapefruit, a little bit of leafiness, grainy biscuit and some caramel. Mouthfeel is medium lighter bodied, slightly high in carbonation, solid and decent aromatic hops without too much bitterness. Essentially, it's a dry hopped IPA, if you think about it that way, the beer makes a lot more sense.

Beautiful brew: lemon-yellow, hazily translucent, and topped by a strong fluffy snow-white head. Retention is good and lacing is excellent.

Strong hops on the nose: bright herbs, citrus, and spicy, earthy yeast. Pale malt base comes across as wheat and straw. Slightly musty, even dirty, on the nose.

Flavor hits right about what you'd expect for a dry-hopped saison: dry, moderately bitter, and bright, with hop tones of citrus and herbs blending with a slightly sweet and rustic pale malt base. Drinks fairly easy: lively and smooth on the palate, with a fairly dry spicy finish.

This is not the best dry-hopped saison in the world, but it's very good. Could use perhaps a touch more sweetness, and more fruit tones from the hops would also balance it out nicely. Overall quite nice and enjoyable.

This brew looks great. Thin white crown sits on top of a hazy straw/golden orange colored beer. Just looks crisp and refreshing.
The smell is huge on the floral. Many layers of it mixing with earthy spices and hay.
Earthy hay is very good in the flavor and the floral notes are in there as well but not as much as expected from the nose. Hops are present with a very slight tanginess. Like tanginess of juice if it was mixed with water. Not overpowering.
The feeling is very dry. Like chewing on hay. Makes for a crisp drink.
Overall, very good Saison.

Pours a little hazy golden color with a pinky head. Aroma- nice fresh hop pop. (Like a brewery would smell) And a little grass. Taste- hop resin. More grass too and some biscuit. A little lemony as it warmed. Mouthfeel a little too fluffy and light.

Can:
The head was a fluffy white, but didn't really rise to the expectations or pure fluffiness of many a saison I have loved looking at, similar to the no-so-typical cloudiness. What's in my glass ended up more hazy that what seemed to be pouring out of the can, but it's still highly hazed to just short of cloudy. Lacing is pretty decent back on the plus side.

The nose has make back with some saison-like note I enjoy. I like a dry grass to hay aroma, with a little pepper spice it becomes quite good. I get these, but I think the dry hopping comes in with a decent dose of lemon citrus and to a lesser degree some grapefruit.

Feel (and taste to a degree) starts dry to even slightly watery. Little unexpected with my eyes forcing my palate into certain preconceptions as to perhaps a thicker feel. I nice prickly carbonation adds a seltzerish note before a citrus pith, dry, brittle grass, and a little peppercorn spice start to come in. The feel is always light, but sometimes borders on being too thin, though it's also refreshing when I just drink the beer without thinking about the aspects of it.

The back end it lightly pithy, lightly peppery, and quite dry. A bit more citrus, with pith, comes out with warmth. An ever so light little funkiness also sneaks out about halfway down the glass. All in all, it's a refreshing beer that isn't overly powerful in many aspects, but isn't devoid of flavors. They are somewhat nuanced, and maybe due to that I think I would quite enjoy this on the deck on a nice, warm spring afternoon.

Bright gold at first becoming lightly hazed with the yeast addition. Lasting foam around the edges.

Harsh weird phenols at first, medicinal. Becomes a little softer over time, but nothing remotely hoppy in the aroma.

Ugh, super weird phenolic taste too. Acrid and bitter, peppercorns, weird medicinal notes like sterile gauze, plastic, and castor oil. Where are the hops? The dry hopping wasn't noticeable in the aroma, and the taste is fairly bitter but without any hop flavor, the yeast funk is so extreme and overpowering.

Lighter bodied in the Grisette style, but marred by a funky yeast that has an overpowering gross medicinal taste that sticks to the palate and doesn't go away. Personally, I like Brett and funky beers, but this is just jarring and unpleasant.

I was excited to see an Other Half collaboration but overall it wasn't an enjoyable experience. Much less so at $22/4pk. which is fairly ridiculous.

Edit: Drinking very cold seems to suppress some of the weird off notes initially, but they're still very present.
