Big fizzy, sudsy head that dissipates quickly, murky light brown/dark gold body. Definitely not a looker, but there is tons of complexity here. Some brown sugar and caramel notes reminiscent of an English barleywine, vinous elements, phenolics, mild but persistent bitterness, hints of apples, maybe raisins and dates, definite booziness on the palate and apparent as lingering heat. Not so dissimilar to a Belgian quad or strong dark ale in fact. Has a bit of that middle weight feel with fine, lively carbonation. Not quite as effervescent as the Belgian styles, perhaps. Packs a bit of a punch! Nice to get a darker barrel aged beer that’s not your run of the mill attempt, from one of the state’s finest breweries.
