New Terrain Brewing Co

This is an attempt at recreating a Belgian wit (white) beer. It has most of the Belgian yeastiness, but there is an unpleasant funk smell that also transfers to the taste. The 16 oz can I had on 4/15/2024 was canned on 10/25/2023 so that might be the issue here.

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours yellow orange with a small white head. Smells of wheat, not that strong. Tastes of orange and wheat, slight banana. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a good beer.

 

 

Bought two cans from Beer Drop. My first from New Terrain. Five years old, I'm calling them a 4th Generation crafter; those born in the teens of this Century. (4th Generation I see as big into both softer beers such as NEIPAs for the hop-heads and wheats for the malt-heads. There also is a Wild and sour strain, but that's another story.)

In any evolutionary classification, Suntrip is above average.
Looks good at the pour; but after the foam recedes... enough foam remains, but there is too little protein activity to offset the murk. (This tells me this wit's yeast needs to be more alive before this becomes a master wit.) Smells are barely above average, there is a healthy dose of fruit worked-up by the yeast on the malts... but not full like the masters. Tastes are the same, an integrated ale; but that is only prerequisite to a repeat taste. In the mouth, it seems thin... but that is OK given that this is a wonderfully refreshing wit. Also pleasantly soft. I will have the second can with food and suspect it will perform good enough as a table ale to have again... providing I can find it here or, more likely, order from Beer Drop again.

New Terrain has a great website for a 5 year old. Everyone is having fun and dedicated to their craft. There also seem to be a lot of brewers like that stretching on the Front Range from Fort Collins, thru Denver (New Terrain is in a Denver suburb) to Colorado Springs. The Front Range is a special place in which America's vast prairie enters rolling hills nestled up against dramatically-rising, magnificent mountains. Is that a recipe for craft brewing ?

 

Very weak on flavor, witbier or otherwise. Very mild coriander notes and it almost tastes like a hefeweizen as a result. I am not getting any citrus either. Body is on the weaker side but carbonation is decent. It is drinkable that is the best compliment I can possibly give this beer.

Pours a hazy yellow, like the darker yellows on the can. Good, fairly long lasting head of foam. Lacing is okay.

Smell is of coriander, big time, light pitted fruit, banana, citrus.

Loads of coriander and banana in the taste. Minor fruitiness, minor citrus presence to my palate.

Medium body with just lower than medium carbonation.

Nice representation of the style.

i liked this one pretty well. its also one of the more traditional style beers i have had from these guys, who seem to be experimenting with everything and have not put out a whole lot of basic beers in my experience with them. this is solid, especially if you like your witbier to be really estery and yeast driven because this one certainly is. a light soapy element to the nose, but then big citrus and coriander notes, white wine and green pear esters, subtle rock candy and earth dry wheat, even a red and green apple thing too, the yeast is really high tone and big here. there is some light spice in the flavor along with the coriander, white pepper and an anise sort of note, cool with the highly fruity yeast, orange and pear here at the end, definitely fermented warm to encourage its belgian essence to fully develop. simple beer in a lot of ways, but worthy of the medal it won, surprisingly clean to finish, soft and full from the wheat, and nicely carbonated. its summery and refreshing when its ice cold, and really is a pretty approachable and well made example of the style. cool to see their cans getting out a little bit as well, the packaging on this is sharp.
