Being the BA-er who added this BSDA, I should have reviewed it sooner.
But the 32 ounce crowler I got from Beer Drop intimidates me, so I held it longer than I should have; given that the New Terrain label suggests drinking it in 3 days of the fill date of 12/7. But, it is still fresh to me.
Mons Solide ("My Strong," as near as I can translate) gives us truth in advertising.
But, I am a pretty good customer of Beer Drop because they bring me lots of different Belgian-inspired ales from The Front Range. And most have this common problem: the Mile High inspires brewing, but it does not inspire Belgian yeasts.
My analysis usually presents itself in the Looks. Mons Solide's Looks are not its strong suit. After a few seconds of a moderate pour, it Looks more like a spirit than an ale... let's call it average among North American Belgian-inspired attempts. Smells tell me there is fruit involved; and this is an improvement. Tastes are, at least, a balanced dark fruit bowl with a couple of spices; yet, nothing seeking to dominate. For Feel, the weak yeast announces itself again; but Mons Solide still is refreshing in a winter sort of way. But I will say this about Mons despite its weak yeast: it does inspire creative thought.
Compared to Mons Solide, I give New Terrain much better marks Overall for two reasons. First, the ABV is well-concealed and this certainly works to everyone's advantage. Second and while this is my third from New Terrain, I just recognized for the first time that they are in the same small town as the former headquarters of the mega-brewer, Coors. To be able to survive there, well... I must give them love of 4.25.
