This was a solid Baltic porter, good flavor without being too malty or too black lager-ish, and matched the description on the menu at the restaurant where I ordered it. I got some of the currant and black cherry notes. A bit high alcohol for a traditional porter, but not so much for a Baltic, so I guess they got it in the right range. Being my first Call to Arms brew, it made me want to visit the taproom and try some of their other beers. And isn't that the point?

they were calling this one a baltic porter on their menu, and had a coffee edition happening as well (which wasnt near as nice as this one). its a beautiful brew, shiny like obsidian, clear and slick looking, impossibly dark, and holding an inch of lazy chocolate brown head, pretty stunning presentation really. the beer isnt quite as awesome as it looks though, it lacks the depth on the grain front i expected it to have based on the color, the roast is there, but the expected bitterness and charred aspects dont seem to be there. they may have overcompensated for specialty dark malts with too much caramel types in the middle, as there is a lingering sweetness that both overshadows the dark grain, and also interferes with the lager type aspects, which i expect to taste and feel in a baltic porter. i really dont here, although i like all the body it has, and the way i taste it forever, never really finishes. maybe im being too harsh, its a really good beer, but i think a few tweaks would make it one of the top porters in denver. a little too sweet, but the alcohol is well hidden. more yeast influence, especially if this really is a lager, would be nice on the back end too, but still a unique example of the style.
