64 oz growler filled at the brewery, brought back by a generous friend who was visiting Clifton Hill. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear copper amber colour, kicking up half an inch of creamy, off white head that settles within two or three minutes. A frothy collar and sudsy cap linger on, with a narrow ring of lace adhering to the glass; looks like a red IPA, and the aroma backs up that assumption. Quite malt-forward on the nose, with notes of caramel, toasted grains and biscuits figuring in strongly; the hop profile comes off earthy and piney, with suggestions of tree bark.
Palatable enough, but after a few sips I felt like I was drinking an American amber ale. Malt-forward right off the bat, with doughy sweetness, caramel and toasted grains alongside hints of dried fruits. A little earthy on the back end, with some woodsy hops lasting through a sweet finish of toasted malts and tea leaf bitterness. Light in body, with average carbonation and a slightly slick mouthfeel; seems thin for 6.5%. I'll finish the growler, but I see no reason to revisit this beer in the future.
Final Grade: 3.34, a passable B-. While I'm grateful for the chance to have tried it, Beerdevil IPA is not a great representation of its style. The closest approximation I can come up with is an American amber mashed together with an English IPA, but even if that's how I were to grade it, Beerdevil leaves much to be desired. Drinkable, yet unimpressive - sort of what I'd expect from an IPA brewed inside one of Ontario's biggest tourist traps. I'd suggest trying one of Niagara's other products first, and that holds true even if you're a self-professed hophead.

On tap in a bar in Niagara Falls (Canada). Pours a clear, dark amber color, with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly. Initial impression is a slightly hoppy brew with bready malts and perhaps a bit of caramel. Kind of sweet, overall. Mouthfeel is medium-light; carbonation is middle-of-the-road. Finish is unfortunately sweet and fairly bland. There are so many excellent IPAs out there; don't waste your time/money on this one.

On tap at the Falls View Marriott overlooking Niagara Falls. Even such a great location couldn't make this beer taste any better.
The beer pours a fairly dark copper color with fairly decent head retention and lacing. Alas, this was to be as good as things would get. On the nose, there's some noticeable sweet malt and a hint of dry citrus, with something of a dusty aroma as well. Not the worst IPA I've ever smelled, but definitely not the best. On the palate, this is a borderline drain pour. The amount of sweet malt is considerable, with not nearly enough bitterness to counter the sweetness on the finish. There's also something of a light spearmint flavor, which doesn't enhance the drinking experience. There is some noticeable bitterness on the finish, but it just doesn't seem to mesh well with the malt backbone. Also, for such a low abv. IPA, it's surprising how much heat I got on the finish from the alcohol. Mouthfeel was another unpleasant surprise... this beer has a very thin mouthfeel. As already mention, the finish is hot and bitter. So drinkability is really not all that great.
