Winter in San Diego means surfers break out their fullsuits. And while you may not find many stockings hung by the chimney with care, you’re sure to see those wetsuits hung out to dry on plenty of balconies across the county. Six Suits A-Hangin’ is the 6th installment in our “Twelve Days” holiday series. This Imperial Belgian-style brown ale is brewed with caramel and brown malts for rich flavors of graham crackers, roasted nuts, and peppery Belgian spice. Aging on French oak adds a hint of vanilla. As for the finish? It’ll warm you from your head to your frozen toes.

Pours a murky dark copper with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, roasted nut, caramel, earth, and slight wood aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, graham cracker, nut, spice, earth, wood, and slight yeast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid aromas and flavors, but the French oak in this one is somewhat subtle.

Glass: Karl Strauss 26th anniversary tulip glass
From: Bine & Vine in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $12.59
Purchased: Feb. 26, 2016
Consumed: March 3, 2016
Misc.: Bottled in Dec. 2015
Didn’t know much about this beer when I got it. I just knew I liked Karl Strauss and I knew I liked its specialty brews. Reading it makes me thing of a Winter Warmer with a Belgian twist. This should be a good one.
Poured an auburn, dark amber, semi-clear color with two fingers of khaki white, fizzy head. Average-to-above average uneven foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Average retention. (Sight - 3.75)
First whiff was a bit everywhere. First thoughts were booziness, dark plum and stale beer in that order. Second go I got perfume, red apple, Belgian peppery spices, grape, honey, nutmeg, hints of cinnamon and sweet caramel. (Smell - 3.75)
Tasted pretty close to the smell, specifically plum, red apple, dark grape, honey, spicy Belgian peppery notes, nutmeg, graham cracker, fruitcake, sweet caramel and a touch of oak. Alcohol is hidden. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Somewhat long, spicy finish. (Feel - 4.00)
This was a decent beer, but I may have been a bit nice on the ratings for most of the categories. Not worth the price, but happy to have tried it. (Overall - 3.75)

Clear brown colored ale with a small brown colored head.
Smells of spice and caramel and a bit of coffee. Sweet with the smell of cherries. Spice scent is mostly cinnamon. Faint scent of Cherry Brandy.
Starts out mildly sweet and tasting of wood. Caramel and cinnamon flavors. Strange taste of cardamom to this.
Mouthfeel is good.
Overall an OK holiday beer but NOT a must try beer.

The brewery calls this an "Imperial Belgian Brown aged on French oak." Then I look at the label and realize "OH, wetsuits." From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine for $12.59.
Beautiful creamy fine-grained off-white foam in the Crooked Line tulip. Brew is clear red amber. It does taste like there are spices involved, and it smells like fruitcake. Deeply roasted malt with a long caramel aftertaste. Just a touch of hops but some bitterish spicy notes.
There is a little yeasty flavor but mostly it's the drying quality. It goes from the distinct candy taste as you sip to the rich malt, and then the Belgian yeasty, scratchy finish. Another highly drinkable Christmas brew from KS. Well made and tasty.
