Happened to be at Hamilton’s right before their Second Saturday with Karl Strauss. On a whim decided to get this Maple Whiskey Barrel Aged Wreck Alley instead of the 28th anniversary Belgian Quad. Looking back, I should have purchased the Bourbon Barrel Aged Rye Imperial Stout. Had some real high hopes since I’m a Wreck Alley fan.
Was very dark in Hamilton’s as always, but appeared to pour a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki frothy head when I got it. No bubbles underneath the fray. Very good wet foamy lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Smelled huge whiff of boozy bourbon up front, reminding me of Alpine’s Dark Elixir (or Cherry Turpentine like I called it). Also got maple syrup when I dug deep, maple walnut as well. Not really getting anything else. (Smell - 3.00)
Taste was better. Still hot and boozy bourbon, maple syrup, maple walnut, dark chocolate, hints of wood and brown sugar. Was growing on me as it went down. (Taste - 3.50)
Full body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming, boozy finish. (Overall - 3.75)
This grew on me a bit, but could not shake the Dark Elixir notes. I think I overrated this one. (Overall - 3.50)
