“What’s a Cold IPA? What’s this beer taste like? What’s cooler than being cool?” Hey now, one question at a time please. A Cold IPA is brewed with lager yeast fermented at a slightly warmer temperature (inviting the hops to be the star of the show), while the addition of flaked corn makes this beer super dry, crisp, and oh-so drinkable. It’s bright and citrusy, with a pop of tropical fruitiness and notes of sweet grapefruit. As for what’s cooler than being cool? The chance to collaborate with the absolute legends at Sierra Nevada feels pretty close, don’t you think?

Grabbed a variety 6-pack and a 4-pack of El Segundo’s Broken Skull Lager after a quick stop with the family. The Karl Strauss website read ““What’s a Cold IPA? What’s this beer taste like? Poured a medium yellow clear color with four fingers of rocky white head. Could see tons of fast-moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. World-class foamy layered lacing. Perfect foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled mango, Mosaic, floral, bubblegum, melon, pine, lime, grass, herbal, grapefruit, Citra and Cascade. About as good from the can. (Smell - 3.75)
Taste followed the nose for the most part with some extra dryness. Got mango, Mosaic, floral, grass, melon, pine, lemon, lime, Cascade, hints of bubblegum, grapefruit, herbal and some Citra. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Creamy-to-oily texture. Soft carbonation. Dry, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.50)
Might have overrated this a little bit. Had it a very good but still not sure I’d want to have another. (Overall - 3.75)

Quite sudsy in the mouth with a medium body and tangy acidity. Moderate astringency and bitter aftertaste. Citrus aroma of lemon and lime. Slight malty sweetness and starts with a green fruity flavor. Grapefruit in the finish. then it gets quite bitter.
Didn't get off to a good start-- popping the can resulted in a big spew, gushing down the table onto the carpet. Dated 04/11/22, serves me right for shopping at Total Wine. But I've always liked Karl Strauss as a big brewery that made better beer than most, so I had to try it.

Pours a crystal clear golden color with a thick big bubbled head. Leaving lots of sticky lacing.
Smells grainy and piney.
Taste is very bready to start, a mixture of bitter hops, grains, and citrus in the mid, and a grapefruity flavor into the finish.
