L: classic black-and-tan look, very dark brew topped by creamy thick head of beige/tan foam that is sticky; keeps a tidy collar of beige foam, a little skin
S: sour grain, yeast, chocolate, dark-roast coffee
T: coffee, espresso, red wine, plenty of oak/toasted oak/roasted malt flavor ... comes off at times like a stout aged in wine barrels (at a much lower ABV of course); the red wine, almost a meaty red wine, really comes through over the more traditional dark-malt flavors, but the aftertaste is perfectly in line with the shwarz, very woody ... lightly toasted wood
F: very soft, ale slick, light, almost has a cask-conditioned or nitro feel; the pour from the tap was vigorous, so that sapped it of some of its carbonation, but the trade-off is not bad (aroma and flavor still very in tact, especially the nose off the original head)
O: intriguingly tasty ... Deep Runner is my first brew from Bakfish, and it's good enough for more investigation; the red wine flavor note could be an off flavor (creamed corn or butter) getting mixed in with the "on" flavors, or it could be something the brewer found in his/her malt bill that brings out the flavor -- whatever it is, it's kinda cool and something I'd like to check out when they start canning; super light mouthfeel and overall drinkability combined with the good flavor makes for a solid schwarz, the kind that gets even tastier as you go from pint 1 to pint 2 and 2 to 3 and so on (double points for keeping that ABV under 5.0!)
