Sleeman India Pale Ale is the second in our John Sleeman Presents series. This ale reaches back all the way to 18th century England, where it was first brewed to export to thirsty English troops in colonial India. The Sleeman family personalized the recipe back in the 1800's with a brewmaster's special attention to detail, and now presents it to you one more time for your continued enjoyment.

Sleeman IPA from Sleeman Breweries. Bought a 12 mix pack for 14,99$
Look: Yellow red colors with a finger of head.
Smell: Hops and caramel.
Taste: Hops, mid bitterness.
Feel: Easy drinking. light to medium body, the flavor is an a light side. More flavor than a Keith's
So overall would I recommend it? Sure, as an IPA it is okay, nothing to crazy about but much much better than a Keith is.

A mixture of darker colors, amber and orange mostly, yields a minor white head that disappears fast. Aroma was just devoid of hopping. Missing entirely.
Taste was just as lacking in the hop department, but overall, lacking in the flavor department as well. Tasted like club soda with malt and bittterness.
For having really no 'off' flavors, this one was as bad as it can get, just nothing you want in any style of an ipa really.

Flashback #306 - Has a bready, malty feel but decent enough.

341ml clear as ever was bottle, a refugee from the local Liquor Monopoly's remainder bin.
This beer pours a slightly cloudy, medium copper amber hue, with one fat finger of puffy, tightly foamy, and perhaps a tad creamy off-white head, which leaves some random spackled rime lace around the glass as it quickly and evenly subsides.
It smells of musty leafy, floral hops, crackery pale and caramel malt, with a touch of sweetish corn, a metallic stoniness, and a late-arriving lemon polish and stale orange pith bitterness. The taste is more hop-forward, but that's about it, as said hops manifest in a bland, muddled citrus nature, and flat, green piney notes, before a weak, cereal-informed bready caramel malt comes idly sidling by.
The bubbles are quite sedate, and barely perceptible at times, the body on the lee side of medium weight, and kind of tacky in its attempt at smoothness. It finishes on the sweet side, just, the bready caramel malt waving goodbye to the hops that hardly were.
If they were going for old-school English here, then Sleeman hit the mark, and more, as this is a rather underwhelming IPA, no matter what side of the fence you sit on (not including Minhas, of course). No off-flavours, so points for that, but otherwise, this is a relatively weak effort at convincing macro drinkers what an IPA should really be, in any of its many forms.

341 mL bottle taken from a Sleeman Selections six-pack picked up at the LCBO. This is one of those brands that is typically only available at The Beer Store in 12-24 bottle cases, so I'm rather glad that they opted to put together this new sampler, which also includes two of their similarly-treated brews (the Silver Creek Lager and Fine Porter). Served slightly-chilled.
Pours a somewhat foggy copper-amber colour, with one half-finger of dense, off-white head seated atop the liquid. The aroma is weak and rather uninspired, with only a touch of leafy, floral hops and lemony citrus to remind you that it's actually an IPA - otherwise, the caramel malt and sweet cereal grains are all that can legitimately be picked out of the bouquet.
The flavour is similarly underwhelming. Grainy, vaguely bready malts mingle with caramel malt sweetness, with the previously-mentioned floral hops and lemon concluding the forgettable flavour profile. Sweet finish with some accompanying dryness; not what I want from this style, and kind of gross, actually. Light-bodied, with fairly restrained carbonation that prickles the tongue and helps to scrub the cloying aftertaste away. Relatively easy to drink quickly, and not really good for anything else.
Final Grade: 2.88, a C. By Sleeman's standards, their India Pale Ale is a tolerable offering, but as an IPA it's completely forgettable. American IPA fans will scoff at this one's limp-wristed hop profile, and English IPA fans will be left longing for a sturdier, more refined malt backbone. This is one of Sleeman's lesser-known brands for a reason - unlike the porter, it's just not very good.
