341 mL bottle from their 'Beers of Summer' mixed 12 pack, purchased at TBS. Dated Mar 29 2019 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a crystal clear golden-blonde colour, sporting one finger of loose, bubbly white froth that falls apart in sixty seconds or so. A narrow collar of foam is all that remains, save for a decent swath of sticky lace; looks about right for the style, and the aroma is along the same sort of (very plain) lines. There's some wheaty, grainy pale malts amidst a grassy, leafy hop note, with very slight suggestions of citrus and apricot.
A decent pale ale - understated in terms of flavour of course, but it does possess a pleasant hop-derived fruitiness, which helps make it easier to toss back than most of the mainline Sleeman slop. I'm getting hints of orange and stone fruit, backstopped by a crackery, wheaty cereal grain sweetness that gives way to a grassy, weakly pithy hop note on the back end of the sip; wheat/grain husk persists into the aftertaste, but only for a moment. Light in body, with active carbonation levels that are biting at first, but settle down over the course of the glass, providing a more satisfyingly crisp texture over time. Extremely drinkable - I needed to crack open a second bottle just to assess its mouthfeel, as I'd finished off my first serving by the time I started to write that part of the review.
Final Grade: 3.3, on the cusp of a B-. At least slightly better than that 5514 Wheat they put out a couple of years ago, Sleeman's Dog Days Summer Ale is acceptable, but not much more than that. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age, or maybe Sleeman is actually starting to put some effort into their seasonal brands, because this (and their Pier Point, also included in this mixed pack), while being very uninspired compared to the craft alternatives, are tolerable macro pale ales. Not tolerable enough to put Sleeman on my radar of course, but I'm fine with buying one of these crates each quarter.
