This small-batch brew gets its deep, dark brown colour from our dense, dark roasted, robust malts and has a slightly sweet full-flavoured finish.

Available exclusively in our Fall/Winter Sampler Pack for a limited time only, while supplies last.

473 mL can from TBS; two cans of this were included in Waterloo's latest seasonal sampler. Dated Oct 23 2017 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a deep, clear, ruddy copper-amber colour, with one finger of soapy, light tan-tinged head placed atop. It fizzles off disappointingly quickly, requiring little more than two minutes' time to be reduced to a foamy collar, with no cap and essentially no lacing. The aroma manages to turn me off almost immediately, as it consists of relentlessly saccharine notes of candi syrup and caramelized malts, mingling together with fruitier hints of raisin, cherry and fig. It would be much more tolerable if there was something, ANYTHING, present that might distract from the malt sweetness... but there just isn't.

The sugary qualities carry over into the flavour profile, obliterating the tastebuds with each sip and obscuring any subtleties that may or may not be present. Caramel and candi syrup come through alongside some dark fruit flavours - I'm getting mostly raisin, with hints of cherry, fig and plum. Almost cake-like towards the finish, with the syrupy sugar notes lingering into an annoyingly sweet aftertaste with a hint of booze. Light-medium in body, with fairly aggressive carbonation that provides a solid, crisp bite - about what I expect from a Belgian-style dark/brown ale. Even still, this is fairly tiresome to consume.

Final Grade: 2.92, a mediocre C grade. Waterloo Brune is a bit of a mess, and might actually be my least favourite Waterloo-branded product to date. It seemed, at least for a while, that these guys were starting to "get it" - I mean, that applewood smoked beer they did a few years back was a niche brew, sure, but at least it was well-made and novel. I also seem to recall a half-decent blueberry wheat, as well as a serviceable doppelbock and a strong porter within the past few years. But this sugary swill... I don't even know who would want to drink this again. Not me, that's for sure - in fact, I'd rather drink their dark lager or amber (also included in this sampler), and those are nothing special. Tick it if you must.

Purchased a mixer pack specifically for this one, but I did not enjoy it.
