473 mL can from the LCBO, one of three new beers in Waterloo's Signature Series mixed pack. Coded Aug 21 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep chestnut brown with coppery highlights; it's topped with an inch of foamy, soapy, light beige-coloured head that dissipates in a little under five minutes. An attractive swath of messy lace is left in its wake, in addition to a tight collar and thin cap. Lots of vanilla and dark chocolate on the nose, with the espresso also figuring in strongly - other than that, I'm getting hints of chocolate syrup, caramelized sugars and some roastiness.
The flavours follow the aroma - big, sweet dark chocolate at first, with chocolate syrup, roasted grains and caramel right behind. The espresso and vanilla dominate on the back end, with roasted coffee and vanilla lingering into a rich, chocolatey aftertaste that lasts for several seconds. Light-medium in body, with light carbonation that softly tickles the tongue and a smooth, pleasing mouthfeel. I wouldn't have guessed this was 6%, so I suppose I could argue that it's surprisingly drinkable... except the vanilla and sugar overload make that a moot point.
Final Grade: 3.23, a tolerable C+. Waterloo's Roasted Vanilla Espresso Dark Lager isn't all that bad, but it's not for me. Too much vanilla plus too much sugar equals a 'nope' from this beer geek nine times out of ten. The espresso flavouring is nice enough, and I do like the dark chocolate notes, but the cons simply outweigh the pros. The real sad thing is that in spite of its mediocrity, this is probably the best of the three beers in this mixed pack. If Waterloo is just going to phone it in with this kind of effort, then I have little doubt that Carlsberg will make better use of their tank space.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Review from notes.
Appearance - Dark brown with small tan head. Pretty good staying power.
Smell - Lots of vanilla overlaid from a roasty aroma. Not much coffee. Super sweet aromatically.
Taste - Tons of vanilla, a little espresso and more chocolate on the backend. Quite sweet and the flavors seem artifical.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and easy enough to drink.
Overall - Too sweet, but at least not syrupy, the "natural flavors" are well put together but seems like and additive at the end.

Pours black like a stout, very little light gets through. Grains and smoke on the nose. The smoke flavour and the strong coffee flavour punch you in the face on the first sip. Not for me
