Tallboy from TBS, one of three new beers included in their latest Signature Series mixed pack. Coded Feb 13 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a murky, ultra-pale pinkish-amber hue, producing an inch of soapy, bubbly white head that seeps off within three or four minutes' time. A glorious, full curtain of lace remains behind, with a frothy, sudsy collar and cap floating on the surface - looks great. Grapefruit juice on the nose, with lesser hints of wheaty, bready pale malts and hibiscus - simple, but it works.
This is a mellow, low-key brew compared to most of the other grapefruit IPAs I've tried: 'juicy' would be an exaggeration, but I do taste a decent hit of grapefruit concentrate. Soft wheat malt sweetness and white bread, with hibiscus and earthy, herbal tea-like notes at the finish; grapefruit lingers briefly into the aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with sharp carbonation that remains crisp and lively well into the course of the glass; very easy to toss back, and refreshing to do so.
Final Grade: 3.7, a respectable B grade. Waterloo's Grapefruit Hibiscus IPA shows real potential as a semi-sessionable summer patio beer. Taken purely as a grapefruit IPA, it's underwhelming, yet the combination of citrus & hibiscus, plus the relatively low abv & bitterness do make for a surprisingly quaffable flavoured pale ale. This sampler is off to a strong start - good job Waterloo!
