pours out a hazed straw yellow hue with a moderate bone white head supported by ample carbonation. some clingy lace for good measure. bready malt aroma, spicy noble hops and a hint of yeast. the taste is certainly different than the contemporary pils. neutral bread and yeasty malt base, a hint of adjunct with a subtle noble, yet dirty hop bite. there is even a discernible alcohol note. some lingering bitterness rounds out the dry finish. an ample, full, body with a crisp and hop prickly mouthfeel. drinkability is pretty decent...crisp and refreshing, yet yearns to paired with a salty snack.
overall a pretty decent euro style pils. i'm curious if the hop bill is 100% noble and german, or has some sort of domestic variety included. anyway, this throwback original is a great beer. glad i had the chance to drink it down!

The beer that enlightened me to finding better beers back in the mid-80s. Merchant du Vin found one of the oldest breweries in the country, recognized the good beers they were brewing and decided to let the rest of the country know.
Schell brought this one back for the 30th anniversary of those pre Micro Boom® days, complete with the vintage, Charles Finkel label design. Here's to hoping it's the same beer I remember so fondly. Prosit to Chaz and Grant for making this available.
A -- Clear, light gold with a sudsy white head that holds up well.
S -- Light grains and bready malt with mild citrus, spiciness and DMS.
T -- Mildly sweet, bready malts up front, spicy hops balanced with yeasty breadiness in the middle, yeastiness bread in the finish with a distinct spicy bitterness, with some mild citrus, in the aftertaste.
M -- Mouthfeel is soft to crisp with a dry finish and medium-light body.
O -- A very nice beer to enjoy in great quantities. There's some of that nostalgia in the sweet bready flavor; something lacking in just about all mass-produced U.S. beers in 1985 when I first found this. In those days regionals ruled for those of us looking for something beyond the ordinary. I can taste the roots of my current tastes in beer with this throwback. Please, make more!

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.
Super clean throughout, pale yellow hue shows a perfect clarity. Lacing does a great job sticking to the glass. Peppery, herbal, floral hop nose with dried grainy grass in the back. Very crisp as expected, clean dry malty palate with a good dose of balancing hops that provide a decent amount of flavor.
Would love to see this in 16oz cans ... a delicious brew.
