Poured from the 12 oz. 30th Anniv. bottle into a weizen glass.

Pours a lovely, cloudy light orange with a nice dense head of creamy foam that leaves lacing all the way down the glass.

The aroma is delightful and potent: Lots of clove and banana.

The taste begins with a little hop bitter not followed by lots of clove spiciness, a bit of ripe banana and then a nice, lingering hop bitter.

The mouthfeel is smooth and almost creamy.

Overall, a wonderful experiment from Schell's. I like the little bit of hop bitterness added to a weizen. Thoroughly enjoyed this beer.

pours out a cloudy, unfiltered gold colour....lighter than a traditional weizenbock . thick foamy head with great retention. plenty of lace. aroma is full of soft fruity esters typical of the style, but with spicy hop additions. one whiff and there is definite experimental aspects to this brew. upon tasting, one can pick out the usual wheat flavours along with some subtle spicy clove and over ripe banana. the heavy handed spicy, and somewhat bitter hop addition seems out of place for the style. alcohol warmth is there. strangely neutral yeastiness also intrigues and befuddles. the body is full and rich while the mouthfeel is a bit coarse and definitely too bitter for the style. finishes overly dry with more lingering bitterness. drinkability is ok, i like it but expected something more.

overall, an experimental concoction that is interesting, yet disappointing. oh well, nice try at a style i know Schell can crush if they so desire.

Appearance: Cloudy yellow, huge head.

Smell: Cloves, lemony.

Taste: Moderate sweetness with banana and lemon, then switches gears into a semi-bitter hoppiness, then finishes with yeasty clove flavor.

Overall: Beer #3 from the Schell weiss mixer. I was most looking forward to this beer because I absolutely loved the 2010 Schell Snowstorm weizenbock. Unfortunately I did not enjoy this nearly as much. It was kind of all over the place, and light on what I enjoy in weizenbocks (lots of banana, heavyness, sweetness). Interesting but a little disappointing.

Thanks again to Matt for the bottles and the proper glassware.

Poured this into the Schell hex-base weisse glass. Slightly cloudy golden liquid, with a large fluff of white head that displayed good retention and lacing. Aroma was yeast-dominant, notes of banana and clove, as would be expected, toasted wheat, citrus zest. Taste was on the dull side, bland pale malts and toasted wheat, bready yeast, banana and clove, slight sugary sweetness, damp compost. Not too bad for the style, but I wasn't really feeling it. Seemed old. Light-medium body, a bit harsh in the mouthfeel. Not terrible, but I definitely wouldn't want anymore than a single serving.

Cloudy golden yellow with a white head that settles down but not out.
Soft enjoyable spiciness with banana with the wheat and a generic yeast aroma. Not outstanding but good.
Again a nice and soft spiciness with the banana and clove. This boy is chewy and it coats the teeth and tongue with a sticky goodness, and the clove lingers for a very long time. Shot of warmth in the gut, but this isn't an overly big beer but the mouthfeel makes it seem bigger than it is. Carbonation is nice too with soft fullness and a real enhancement to the experience.
The "bock" part of this is background and it presents as more of a bigger weizen and from that feels more summer like than winter like. Some hop presence with a green taste and feel in the finish and lingering. Soft fruit flavors show (eg. orange shows in time), but to me they are in the background to the spiciness of the yeast.

12oz bottle from the weiss sampler (and schells isn't craft beer...)

Smell is boozy bubblegum and dusty wheat. Taste is very similar, with some spicey hops and the bubblegum wheat. Medium carbonation.

Good experiment, it teeters between sublime and awful.

August Schell Weizenbock. #4 in the 30th Anniversary Hefe Weizen Series.

Bright golden and clouded, below a thick, snowy white head. Looking good.

Aroma: slightly sharp, citric and spicy, this has got the wizen yeast thing going on full steam ahead. Orange and lemon galore. Lovely stuff.

Taste: Once on the palate, it's hefe weizen all over the place, Lays long in the mouth and stays a spell. Soft, slightly sweet, creamy and delicious. You can taste some fusels, it's got to be a bit higher on the alcohol level, though I'll have to hunt some to find the number, as Schell's doesn't advertise that fact on the label.

One thing that surprises me is the color. Bocks are normally darker, stronger lagers. Hefe Weizens are top-fermenting ales, and the wheaten bocks, or doppelbocks, I've had before are typically darker in color. Then, there's the ….(fill in later) (btw, if you can read this, pretend you didn't. shhh….)

Well, never mind about all that. It's flat out delicious, and my favorite of the four wheat beers in the 30th Anniversary sampler pack.

Hey, I forgot to check out…what does the label tell us? "Schell's Weizenbock is an experimental Weiss Beer made for this series. It's stronger and aggressively hopped with Triskel hops. It's a uniquely fruity, hoppy wheat beer experience."

That it is.
