Snowstorm changes each year. In 2001, this was a cherry vanilla porter.

As close to black as you can get in appearance. Nice medium rocky brown head that has a bit of retention. The aroma. Oh the aroma. When I first smelled this beer back in December I knew I was in for a treat. Pretty heavy cherry sweetness on the nose complimented by nice hints of hazelnut and hot chocolate. The taste is dominated by cherry and hazelnut. When I first tried it and didn't look at the style, it reminded me a bit of one of my favorites of years gone that no longer exists.......the Longshot Hazelnut Brown Ale. The deep roasted notes of the Porter Background provide a nice backdrop for the cherry and vanilla to do their work. Out of about 30 winter brews I tried this year, this one would be in the Top 3.

cherry-vanilla porter. at first i didn't care for this but as i worked my way through the twelve pack over two weeks, i grew to like it. i think the cherry dominates over the vanilla and over the entire profile of the beer...sort of syrupy like cough syrup but in a good way. very sweet and maybe should be drank as a dessert beer and not as a session beer. after two or three it's time to move on. very interesting.

-Very interesting beer...Schell's uses a different "Snowstorm" recipe every year and this year they constructed a cherry vanilla porter...Great vanilla aroma...vanilla strongest flavor with some cherry tartness in the aftertaste..sweetish, and a tich syrupy...In my opinion this is what winter beers should be all about, taking chances with creative styles...couldn't drink a lot of these in one sitting but a nice solid change-up..

Cherry Vanilla Porter is listed for this version of a Holiday Seasonal beer. Aroma is mostly cherry with a mild background of malt. Head is full. Dark brown to black, with red visible if held to the light. Dark malt flavor first then quickly followed be the cherry which is there to the finish. Vanilla is noted briefly in the middle. Dryness stays of front of tongue, but not in back. A medium to heavy level of carbonation. An interesting and enjoyable offering for this years winter brew.
