Came in a "Herd O' Bocks" variety pack.

Pours muddy reddish with a caramel-rootbeer-barrel tint. The head is popcorn colored and 3 fingers tall leaving appreciable lace on the sides of the glass in IPA-like density. It really is a marvel to look at. Body is 80% opaque with light penetrating illuminating the sides. I'm counting this just short of a perfect appearance.

Aroma of baked grains, caramel corn, red globe grape, vines, grassy.

Taste is pretty darn good. Lots of baked malts with a nice hop bitterness that turns sort of metallic towards the end. There's sweet notes of caramel, kettle corn, crouton, and toasted orange in there.

Feel is creamy yet carbonated, semi-dry finish.

This re-release is a fair swing but not quite up to par with the Heirloom or the modern Bock. I have two more, so I'm happy, but if it were my last, I wouldn't be sad.

 

 

russet brown, with no head anda very minimal lace, decent carbonation was evident. Smell was grainey with a slighlty off fruit aroma in the back anda hint at some bitterness. The taste intresting,albeit not very comple x at all. Sort of a glammed up amber. Lots of malt with a slight bittering hops presence

Just picked up a 6'er at Heritage tonight. This is a 2009 bottle.

Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into an oversized snifter.
Forming a 2 finger off white foamy head. Settling to a thin cap of retention with assorted islands of clumpy bubbles. The color is alost black, but brightens up to a glowing mahogony, almost wine like when held to light.
Thin drapes of lace drapes me glass.

Aromas of burnt caramel, yeasty bread and blue cheese? A touvh of grassy hops and a surge of malt.

Taste is pretty smooth with alot of malt dominance, touch of bitter chocolate, oats? This is pretty smooth with a thick retention cap, so I'm thinking oats. A faint smell of elder flowers, dark fruit, and wiffs of coffee.

Very smooth and delicious, malt dominant and creamy with carbonation presence, but its smooth and creamy all the while.
I really missed this beer, glad they brought it back. For how long, I'm not sure, so I guess I'll stock up.

Drove down from Mpls to Bock Fest at the Schell's Brewery in New Ulm. I guess beer doesn't get any fresher than that. As much of the sampling was done in 15 degree (fahr.) weather, the scent/flavor detection abilities of myself were somewhat limited. Like someone else reported, this is like a little brother to some of the more "in your face" Bocks. Rich, caramel brown, but not "heavy" when you drink it. Fair head that settles down, but lingers. Nice flavor without being overly sharp or overbearing, nice drinkability.

Clear bown copper color, small frothy bubbled dusty brown head, minimal lacing sticks. Aroma is mild and calm of toasty malts and breads with slight nuts, anise, and caramel notes. Taste is mild, mild, mild. Some OK notions of toasty caramel and bread with some very slight spice midway, notes of nuts inbetween the bready sweetness but finishes weak and subdued beyond any lingering quailities, just a bunch of tame sweetness fading quickly.
Feel is quick and smooth, a bit on the weak ended side as far as body, watery in some regards. Nudge over average for a bock. Could be better.

Schell Bock is a medium copper hued bier, and clear throughout. The color is similar to the Salvator I had last night. Head is quite short, thin and fine, with minimal lacing. The nose is on the mild side, with a light bit of malt and doughy/bready aspects to it. Body is about medium, and the light carbonation makes for a fairly smooth ride on the tongue. Taste is malty and semi-sweet from start to finish, yet these flavors do not in any way overwhelm the palate. It is a mild, easy-going bock, a little-brother to some of the heavier-hitting examples out there. Not too rough on the alcohol either....making this a bier that won't knock you upside the head if you want more than a few. Thnx ZAP! Zum Wohl!!

Pours a clear caramel tea-like color with a small cream-colored head. The smell of a light tangy grain is about it and not much else going on. The taste is a little on the faint side with a cooked veggie and sweet corn with a light grain and faint hop in the background. This is a light bodied brew that drinks down okay, perhaps with some sort of meal easier than it does by itself as it finishes way too sweet for a stand-alone beer. Thanks to budgood1 nonetheless! Slight smell of leather and clean hops.. but not much nose. Crystal peach colored with some tints of red. Not a lasting head except for a pale persistant sheen. Low carbonation, light unimpressive mouth. Light caramel sweetness Light malt taste as well as some gritty mellow roast malt. Everything about the beer seems just slightly on the light side. It is not bad it just does not live up to its potential.

Poured a copper color with a fair head that faded to a small cover. The beer left nice lacing throughout.

Aromas of yeast and some spice I couldn't quite pinpoint.

Tastes of some malt, faint carmel, and a clean toastiness. Medium body with a very smooth finish.

Not a bad beer, but not anything to write home about.

Quite an interesting beer. I noticed the "American lager" taste right away (somewhat sweet). Poured an amber hue, slight head and lace, which disappeared quickly. Nice (but sweet) taste, got better as it went. Some carmel notes, smooth and clean. Compares to the macros kind of like Yeungling (Much better than anything the "big 3" put out, but not "world class"). Good beer, nonetheless (thanks, Monk!).

Color is a clear, dark amber, and the head is sturdy and bubbly, an off-white hue. Aroma is clean, with small hints of caramel and nuts. Sweet and silky smooth on the palate, with some fruitiness coming in on the flavor, through the malt. The caramel/toffee/nuttiness also reappears and contributes to a very delicious taste. Nice, sweet finish. Overall, a very good bock.
This my first time tasting this one in 3 years, and the last experience was not good. Maybe I had a bad batch before, or if the beer didn't change, maybe I did!

A deep amber, tinge of orange in color, a sheet of grasping head lies on top. Smell of orange peels and malts are noticed up front. A quick and smooth taste of light roasted malts, followed by a nice touch of hops and caramel, maybe some light chocolate noted. Just a touch of alcohol can be detected. All of this beer's qualities seem hidden and tough to detect, but a good bock.

Clear light brown color, minimal head with big bubbles on the edge and a skim in the middle. Slight lace, kind of gloppy. Cinnamon aroma, slight bit of toffee. Very toasty and bready flavors, some slight anise impression mid mouth and a slightly watery finish. Minimal hop impact. Frankly, Bocks can be hard to read, this one could have used a little more body and caramel-like qualities -- Schell Bock seems to blend into O-Fest territory...but, in keeping with a ram theme, not B-A-A-A-H-D....

Schell’s Bock is a bright amber color with a tawny, dry caramel malt nose. Fairly light-bodied for a bock beer and a little light on the hops, but still a huge improvement over many American bock attempts.

For a regular ol bock this is pretty good...in fact one of the best...some slight toastiness on the nose...pours a fizzy head that fades..copper in color...pretty clear and clean looking...a very nice malty flavor without going overboard with the sweetness. Some great nutty characteristics along with some caramel malt...very little bitterness..creamy and smooth...does not taste syruppy at all...much better than the other standard bocks in this area (Leinie, Point, Huber, etc).

has a clear, deep amber hue with minimal head which quickly fades to nothing. moderate grainy aroma in front with hops lingering in the background. a pretty sturdy malt backbone dominates the above average mouthfeel. the hops are slightly spicy and coarse in the finish but do a good job of balancing the grainy/malty/alcohol flavour. very smooth and creamy and easy to drink.
