I did not notice that this beer was well beyond its best-by date until I had it home. Actually, this beer may have improved with age, the hops had mellowed and the malt matured, with some chocolate notes. Overall, the flavor profile was more of an ESB at this point. Nothing spectacular, but my perception was that this was a fairly low abv brew, and it was surprising that it had aged as well as it had.

Another below-average Trader Joe's beer. I am glad these were available as 77 cent singles. This is easily the uglist APA I have ever seen. It pours a dark yellow with a medium thick off-white head. Some effervescence but the strange coloring really threw me. Aroma is lightly hopped not unlike a regular Lager. Flavor is really bland and uninspired. Chicago deserves a better tribute beer.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck twist off with no freshness date though there is a reference of this beer comparing it to the city of Chicago.
Appearance: The fluffy white head of this hoppy pale ale that comes through with a filtered clarity.
Smell: Citrusy aroma of hops, hints of ruby red grapefruit and pungently floral aromas. Clean other than that with little malt.
Taste: Slick mouth feel in the moderate body, carbonation rolls in late with a meek smoothness. Pungent hop flavour drops in with a whirlwind of rind and citric zest as well as a bitterness that throws the taste buds off. Maltiness is mild with only an under tone of sweetness that stays in the back drop as a lingering dextrin. Finishes very dry and somewhat unbalanced.
Notes: As I said “somewhat unbalanced”. Not too hoppy though the malt is buried under the loudness of the hop character. There are better American pale ales out there to be had but this is not that bad either.

A strange beer contracted by Goose Island for someone. Slight citrus nose mixed with Goose Island's house yeast.
Unbalanced with very little malt base, though the hops are not overwhelming. Nothing fancy with this beer
