473 mL can from the LCBO; coded 2153 0908 and served slightly chilled.
Pours foggy medium gold, topped with one finger of loose, soapy white head that dissipates within a few minutes' time. It splatters a decent swath of lace about in the process, leaving behind a tight collar and some filmy wisps on the surface. Flowery, lemony hops on the nose - gotta be some Centennial in there - but I'm also getting hints of cantaloupe and mango.
Not bad at all - flavours of mango and cantaloupe at the forefront, with hints of grapefruit, orange and bready, grainy malt sweetness close behind. Floral, earthy hops, lemon and grapefruit on the back end, which is moderately bitter; hints of earthy bitterness, citrus pith and mango linger into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with average carbonation levels that lend a little bit of crispness to this pale ale's smooth, slightly slick mouthfeel. Good drinkability; I could have a couple of these in a row, but I wouldn't drink it all night.
Final Grade: 3.78, a B+. Thornbury's Rad Pale Ale is good enough to get the job done, but does it distinguish itself amidst the myriad alternatives? That's up for debate: I wouldn't turn down another glass, but there's not much in the way novelty here, making for a forgettable experience overall. I think session IPA fans might appreciate this brew, but any hophead looking for something a little lighter should consider giving this a go.
