somewhere between pale ale and ipa to me, its mighty hoppy, and it also has some hop bitterness to finish, but its also got a whole heap of grain to it, amber in color, and with some malt body and sweetness running through it, nicely balanced, far from one dimensional, and although its quite substantial, its also a nice drinking pint, especially in the cold montana winter weather, something hearty and warming and satisfying about this one. a caramel note to the grain picks up a wintery piney element in the hops, a classic match, but it works again here, lightly bready meets lightly vegetal, brassy coppery minerals highlight the bitterness of the hops, and the whole thing smells pretty fresh. that said, its also really sweet at the end, under carbonated, and somewhat more malt than hop driven, thats how malty this is. i think it works as a flavorful ale, but its sort of style nonspecific. this is close to being excellent, but seems a few tweaks and a little refinement from the level of something i would be excited to drink again.

edit: they also had a wet hopped version of this with hops grown in montana on, which was a little less bitter and a little more oily and slick and west coast like, but not overly distinctive in flavor, lightly herbaceous but lost a bit to the heft of the grain. i liked this version about the same as the original.
