I usually like English style brown ales but this one, not so much. Maybe I got a bad can but it poured a murky, cloudy brown into my nonic pint glass. There was no transparency at all. It looked like my earliest homebrew attempts. There were some caramel notes on the nose. The taste was odd and earthy with a tartness about it that did not appeal to me at all. The mouth feel was thin and fizzy. I very rarely drain pour a beer but this one made it into our local sewer system after 4 sips.

Appearance: Dark amber in color, with a small tan head, which quickly fades to a scattering of foam. A broken ring of lacing adorns the glass wall.

Aroma: Caramel is most prominent in the aroma, there is smoke, earth and wood as well, and a little bitter cocoa.

Taste: Opens with a moderate smoky, earthy tartness, which defines the taste throughout. As the taste progresses, some wood notes appear, and some burnt toast. Late in the taste, the smoke intensifies a bit, although it is nothing like a rauchbier. Finishes with a lingering earthy, mildly sour note.

Mouth feel: Soft, just a touch tin, with a little zesty carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Pleasant and quite drinkable, a beer suited to cooler days and nights.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce aluminum can, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
