A: This one's pretty think, almost inky black but for some brown coming in at the edges and a dark brown hue in the light. The head is a creamy tan one that reaches a finger or so with solid retention and good lacing mostly in patches.
S: There's lots of roast, chocolate and caramel sweetness also prevalent. When cooking sugar, it's hard to get that balance between smoky and burnt. This is very, very close, but the lean toward heavy char and the light acridity that build are short of perfect.
T: The taste is very similar, and it really makes for an interesting beer. This is the type of beer where a hairbreadth's difference can mean something like a full point, and it could be exceptional. As it is, it's tasty.
M: It might not be thick or full-bodied for a stout, but it's not as lean as a schwarzbier, either. Maybe a medium-heavy body, good carbonation, and decent movement make it easy to drink, though the dryness comes in hard eventually.

Received a 12 ounce bottle from my Dad for Christmas 2016. Just popped this one open not expecting much since I hadn't ever heard of Old Nation. Wasn't impressed with the initial flavor only because there wasn't much there. But I was very impressed by the aftertaste because it was so clean and dry.....like what your pallette feels when it is drinking a dry wine. Would've been a top tiered beer if the initial flavor hit harder, but still a very solid beer that I'd definitely drink again.

12 FL OZ bottle
Served in a snifter
This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves very little lacing.
The smell is sweet. I get some chocolate and roasted malt.
The taste starts out sweet with some chocolate and caramelized sugar. Some roasted malt comes in the finish.
Medium to full mouthfeel
It is a decent stout. The roasted grain flavor grows as it warms and builds on the palate. I had a sample at the pub and bought a single to bring home. That satiated me.

When I first poured this opaque, shy headed beer I was struggling to find anything other than hints of coffee on the nose and little else. First few swigs were equally dismal but something happened two or three more swigs in. Coffee, chocolate and hints of smokiness emerged in great balance and rescued this previously drain destined beer. Please, get this beer, let it warm up (set ti on the counter for about 20 minutes) and consider it for a little while. Justice is served the deeper you get into this beer.

Tried this as a bottle first but then had it on tap at Old Nation Brewing Co. The tap version was enough to convince me to create an account on here just to rate this beer. While the bottle is worth the purchase, the tap is something I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good, unique stout.
Look - Deep black with less than a finger width caramel head.
Smell - Notes of roasted coffee with a sweetness coming through over it.
Taste - Sweetness merges well with the coffee and malts leaving a smooth chocolatey, molasses taste. Noteworthy roasted coffee and sugar leave a slightly burnt aftertaste which produces a near smokey flavor which is not unpleasant but does linger for a bit.
Feel - Very crisp and refreshing light stout. Quite smooth.
Overall - The various aspects of this brew produce a well-balanced refreshing, crisp, and unique stout that pairs well with red meat. Excellent tap experience, but be prepared to wash it down with a glass of water if you don't enjoy the lingering smoke/malt/molasses aftertaste, as it tends to stick with you for a bit.
