Very Good
Helles LagerHelles Lager
Notes: Soft, subtle, and so clean you can taste the field the barley grew in. Less is more in these lagers, and balance is the goal. The yeast, time, and talent we put into our Helles light notes of honey and soft herbal hops with just a hint of bitterness.

Subtlety can't be faked, which is why this is one of our favorite styles to make.

Straw yellow body with a finger of white head. Biscuit, cracker, honeycomb, grassy and floral hops. Taste is more rustic with the bread and cracker, grassy hops are pretty strong on the finish. Body is medium to light with a crisp finish, but with the higher carbonation and hop texture is a little more pronounced than it needs to be for style. Still a good beer for the lake in the summer

Gold in color with a hazy complexion. There’s a fingernail of off white on top. The aroma is of sourdough bread and faintly grassy hops. I’m tasting grassy hops and a suggestion of sourdough bread. The mouth is very light and approachable.

$2.59 for a 16oz can. 5.5% ABV, 18 ibu.

Pours out to a clear medium golden, forming a rocky white head with good retention and lacing. Carbonation is moderate, ~2.5 carbs. The nose is very faint, not much character, just a little sulfur and yeast. Mouthfeel is crisp and clean and medium bodied. The taste is very nice. Clean plain malts with a well balanced bitterness and subtly spicy hop flavor. Clean, simple, tasty, classic. Very well done, no off flavors or aromas. A helles as it should be. Very well brewed and recommended.

16oz can. Poured into a short glass.

Pour: Golden yellow. One finger foamy white head.

Nose: subtle bread, banana malts.

Taste: malty, slightly bitter. Herbal hops as in the description.

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, some crispness but balanced by breadiness.

Overall: this is a good, tasty, fairly clean lager. Some bready ale qualities give it a bit more body and differentiate it. Worth trying and there will be a second go around for me. Could be a go to but will have to see how it goes the second, or third time around.

16 ounce can, recent release. Poured into the closest proper glassware I have, a mostly straight walled pint.
Pours a bright golden color, clear body with a generous cap of white foam. Nose of freshly baked crusty bread, crackers, lemony. Beautiful.
Doughy and crusty bread, clean malts, oyster crackers, lemon and light grass, mild hop spice flavors.
Clean drinking body, no lasting aftertastes.
Overall, this is the best local example that I’ve had. I’d expect nothing less from Old Nation. I’m glad they could showcase this style.

16 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 6/12/2019. Pours crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, wood, peppercorn, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance of bready malts and earthy hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, wood, peppercorn, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness, wood, peppercorn, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome robustness, and balance of bready malts and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with not fruity/yeasty notes. Moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, and moderately bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Slight lingering resins. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is an awesome Germal helles. All around awesome robustness, and balance of bready malts and earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the moderately bitter/drying finish; not aggressive. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Awesome clean Pils/Munich malt showcase, with perfectly balanced Noble hop presence. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example as expected. Great Summer brew.
