True to our reputation, We’ve crafted yet another Hazy Double IPA that boasts a higher ABV and easy drinkability. Turps Hazy NZ Double IPA has a tantalizing blend of hops sourced from the lush landscapes of New Zealand resulting in tropical notes that awaken the palate with prominent flavors of citrusy passionfruit, lemon, and orange, rounded out with zesty grapefruit.

Turps – from Old Nation. 16 fl oz can purchased from Horrocks Market, Kentwood, MI, 20/08/24, $ 5.70 (including tax and deposit), $ 0.357 /fl oz. Reviewed 01/09/24 (Review 3347). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamper “TURPS PKG ON 05/14/24”. On room temperature shelf at the store. Stored at 34 degrees F at home. Served at 43.3 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 58.1 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.5 Looks like a quality orange juice. Second pour releases several large chunks from the bottom of the can.
First pour – Straw (SRM 3), hazy. Can was rolled prior to opening, but apparently insufficiently.
Body – Pale Gold (SRM 4), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), white, high density, average retention, leaving 0.7 – 0.8 crown and rocky partial cap.
Lacing – Poor. Just a couple of lines of small bubbles.
Aroma – 4 – Weak melon. No malt, no alcohol (9% ABV, according to the label).
Flavor – 4.5 – Distinctly melony. No malt, no alcohol. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Faint gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium; approaching creamy; soft but lively carbonation.
Final Impression and summation: 4.25 Another excellent IPA from Old Nation!

A - Bright orange body, hazy and bright, white head with extensive thin line lacing.

S - Strong hit of peach and apricot fruit, dank hops, and pungent minerality.

T - Open is somewhat non-descript fruit and acidity but not the clarity of the nose, a middle of bready malts and some definite alcohol booziness, with a finish of pith and grapefruit zest.

M - Moderate weight, soft texture, and prickly dry close with a lingering resin build.

O - An interesting beer. I think I may have tried this one a bit after its peak, but it is still quite a good brew.

Canned 5/10/24, so 6 weeks old when consumed. Poured into a tulip glass.

Haven't had a new (to me) Old Nation beer in quite some time, and the old standbys that are sitting on shelves in the Nashville market are always horrifyingly old. But a friend from Grand Rapids brought some of these down for a lake weekend, so fun to try something new. Overall experience was very positive, but the taste profile is pretty average whereas the other attributes of the beer are pretty world class.

You could easily mistake this beer for a Tree House hazy -- it's got that kind of beautiful orange-gold glow, creamy but non-murky haze, and a beautiful initial head of bright white, tightly-compact bubbles. Not as much lacing as I initially expected, but a true looker nonetheless.

Wonderful tropical and vineous fruit vibes on the nose with plenty of dank greens -- quintessential NZ hazy personality. Smells big a perhaps just a touch boozy, though that could be the combination of weediness and overripe fruits. It's a really nice fruit salad medley with everything working together well but nothing standing out as easily identifiable or taking the lead. Maybe pineapple, mango, kiwki, nectarine, and grapeskins? I typically like a little more citrus in my hazies, but hard to complain in this one and certainly on point with the hops actually utilized.

That mélange of tropical fruit is less successful on the tongue, as the overripe fruit and deep, dank weediness makes for a pretty overpowering combo. Little sharp, astringent greenness late in the sip, plus some pleasant, pithy bitterness. The latter is a nice complement to the semi-sweet fruit juices but the former unfortunately takes the weediness too far. Again, some balance with a few non-NZ hops would go a long way here. I still drank the hell out of this thing. But a bit of a letdown given the initial build up.

Really wonderful feel to the beer (besides that astringent green hop bite/burn), coating but not sticky. Medium-bodied but still velvety and a touch creamy.

5/31 canning date so 2 months old to the day. Orange juice like appearance, mild head and lacing. Scents of tropical fruit, earthy, slightly dank. Peach, passion fruit, orange , pineapple, and guava flavors, a mild earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, mouth watering finish, boozy burn on the back end. Interesting, wish I had it less aged.

Fully inspired by New Zealand and their hops, Old Nation puts together an imperial IPA in full celebration of those flavors.

Pale, hazy and golden, Turps pours with a milky appearance allowing only a soft backlit glow. As a frothy white crown adorns the rim, the radiant and nearly tangy scent of citrus, tropical fruit, berry, vinous fruit, botanical and tea-llke herbs all round out into a firm citronella perfume. Mild sweetness coats the tongue with notions of cereal, shortcake and honeysuckle.

Racing toward a fruity middle palate, its the hops that shine with under ripened orange, lime, passionfruit, papaya and lighter pineapple as the citrus and tropical fruit impression intertwine. Complementary flavors of gooseberry, white grape and lemon eventually roll into a moderate and smooth bitterness of lemongrass, green tea, verbena, sassafras and spruce for balance and a rounded culmination of white grapefruit in the end.

Medium bodied and drinking crisper and cleaner for stronger hazy ale, the IPA is aided with a creamy and semi-plush malt body to keep the bitterness in check. Finishing bitter-sweet and with a semi-dry feel, Turps allows the white grapefruit flavors to win out in the end.
