the first barrel aged offering i have had from these guys, and its pretty good. a darker and denser wee heavy than is even common in a dark and dense style, almost dark brown in color, very viscous, and like all the beers last night, quite flat looking from the tap at the brewery. the aroma is great though, no real peat or smoke, thats more scotch than scottish, but a caramelized and sturdy grain base that ranges from molasses to cocoa to root beer and back, for a second sweet and syrupy, and then rich and earthy, nicely built for sure, and quite enormous by any standard. the flavor is barrel driven, heavy and woody, some char and some roast and some real vanilla intensity, lots of alcohol too, but appealing all the way. its sticky in the mouth, way under carbonated (that was true of a lot of the beers in here), and dense as batter, but its good in the flavor, the barrel aspect is well done, and i like the beer being a little darker and bigger than is common in the style. what these guys lack in professional quality most of the time they more than make up for in innovation. i think this is solid beer, a nice barrel aged offering, and something that tastes wholly unfamiliar. nice work.
