I bought this bottle at the brewery taproom in Destin, FL. The beer came in a 16 oz brown bottle with a Grolsch-type flip top. It stated on the bottle that this was a collaboration with Cartecay River Brewing. There was also a sticker stating this bottle was brewed in 2019 and bottled in 2022.
L - Medium to dark brown in color with some ruby highlights. The beer is clear at the edges, but looks a bit hazy/murky when held up to the light. There is no real head (which is normal for the style), but there are a few swooshes of foam on the surface and around the edges of the glass. It also shows wine-like "legs" when the glass is swirled.
S - Aromas of dark cherry and walnuts at a low level, with some funky, barnyard smells dominating. Very authentic for the style.
T - Flavors also spot-on for the style. Leather, tobacco, and horseblanket supported by a moderate vinegar-like tartness. The flavors fade quickly after the swallow, and don't have much depth, but otherwise this is surprisingly close to the actual Belgian examples I'm familiar with.
F - Medium body is slightly mouth-coating, supported by low carbonation. Bitterness is indeterminate, because the tartness overwhelms the palate. Alcohol is well hidden behind it all.
O - This is one of the best US-made Oud Bruins I've had. I am very impressed, especially since I had no idea any brewery in my are was making one. Hat's off to Destin and Cartecay!
