This is by far one of my favorite beers that VBC has produced under the British banner in quite some time. While I’m no expert on American flavour profiles in beer, I find it slightly comparable to Ruddles County Ale or even Double Diamond, to be honest. However, it tastes much better—more refined for modern taste buds. If the ABV were reduced by 0.3%, it could easily compete with them. It does sit a bit heavy for a millisecond, offering a quick shot of complexity that lets you know it’s a quality beer. It leaves a dry finish with a slight grain mill note, without lingering flavors, making it enjoyable on its own or paired with salty crisps or a grilled chicken and vegetable meal. It has mild malt and less sweetness as it goes down. As for color and head, it has a golden hay hue with touches of sandstone, resembling a typical pub ale—not as dark as Boddington’s and without much of a head, as expected for the style. This is the kind of beer you can enjoy two or three of before heading off to see your spouse or going out for dinner. It doesn’t sit heavy, which is part of its appeal. It’s just simple and satisfying.
