Drank from a 500 ml white wax dipped bottle purchased at Julio’s Liquors, Westboro, MA
Served in a tulip
Oily, pitch black appearance. Medium bodied for the style. The liquid was topped by a small, frothy, saddle brown head that quickly broke into a thick, bubbly, lasting collar. After each dip, a wall of spotty lacing cascaded down the sides of the glass.
The aroma was fantastic. Rich, complex and very bourbon forward but not overly hot. Malty and robust. Dark chocolate notes came through big time. Loads of cinnamon too. There was a fragrant vanilla quality as well. All in all, sweet and pasty like but not excessively so. Dark fruit notes were also apparent. Booze soaked raisins perhaps. Brown sugar was noticeable too.
The flavor profile was solid but somewhat thin and boozy. Malty up front. Nice melding of roasted malts and sweet chocolate malt notes. Moderate dark chocolate presence. Big, boozy bourbon notes appeared in the center and really intensified as the beer moved along the palate. More roast and booze on the back end and in the finish. Touch of lingering bitterness after the swallow.
The mouthfeel was thinner than anticipated. Somewhat spritzy perhaps. The liquid contained a finely beaded, fairly aggressive effervescence that seemed out of place for the style.
Although the aroma on this beer was fantastic, both the flavor profile and the mouthfeel left much to be desired. This beer had a lot of potential, but the lack of depth and body was rather disappointing.
