A helles lager that is “marked” by the yeast of another beer. Not really a smoked beer in the common sense—much of the color, maillard character, delicate smoky notes, and maltiness come from fermenting this beer with yeast from a batch of Stands to Reason.

Appearance: Pours a clear golden color wtih a one finger head; decent retention with a few squiggles
Smell: Shortbread, subtle smoke, grains and a hint of lemongrass
Taste: Shortbread and a hint of smoke forward with a touch of lemongrass developing; both the sweetness and the smoke grow, after the swallow, and there is a hint of milk coffee, in the finish
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate to high carbonation
Overall: This is an experiment that worked well and has delivered an appealing, quaffable lager
Thanks, zid, for the opportunity

Sadly, I'm already approaching the end of my rather small recent trade with zid. all the stuff that Chris has sent me so far has been great, and I have to imagine this one will be no different. It's a pretty interesting concept, using the yeast from another Smoked Beer to provide all the smokiness. Let's crack it open and find out what it's all about
Pours a clear yellow gold with a finger of soapy white head that fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing
The smoke is rather gentle, but it adds a great accent. I'm picking up on aromas of bread crust, lemon zest, campfire smoke, doughy malt, sweet honey, floral hops, white grape, raw grain, and light coffee
It's even more subtle in taste but it's a damn good subtlety. On the front end of the sip I'm tasting biscuity malt, sweet honey, black pepper, campfire smoke, lemon zest, bread crust, and raw grain. The swallow brings notes of doughy malt, lemon zest, pear skin, campfire smoke, bread crust, floral hops, light grass, and sweet honey
A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes a tad sticky but it doesn't hurt the drinkability
Damn, this is a great subtle take on a smoky Helles. I need more from Suarez

On tap at Suarez Family Brewery in Livingston, NY.
This one pours a nice golden clear yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells kind of like straw, biscuits, and smokey honey, in a way.
This is very mildly smoky, but that works well here, as there’s just a touch smoky, bready, and almost honey like sweetness here, with a line of straw and hay-like bitterness running through it.
This is very light bodied, but clean, refreshing, and super drinkable.
I’d maybe a want a bit more and a closer profile with something like Schlenkerla Helles, but this is still phenomenal all the same.

Can from the brewery in Livingston, NY. Pours a clear dark straw gold with a finger of rocky white head that dissipates, decent lacing; smell is mild smoke, toasted cracker malts, brown bread, mild funky grains and grass, hint of coffee and chocolate; taste follows the nose with light smoke, toasted malts, toasted wheat bread, hints of coffee; feel is light with crisp carbonation, dry finish. A very crushable lightly smokey treat, like the hint of smoke you get on your sweater after sitting by a fire, in a glass.
