Burdock - Kensington Market

 

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. My seventh beer from the Toronto, Ontario brewery, and fourth for 2025...

Poured a 473ml can into a pint glass. A one finger bubbly white head on a cloudy very pale dirty yellow.. The head soon diminishes to a ring. Minimal patchy lacing.

Straw, citrus and bready wheat smells. A mildly sour finish. Tastes of lemon, bread pepper, apples. A dry aftertaste.

A medium/light body. Good carbonation. Overall a light, simple but very pleasant Saison, as billed.

The last beer I drank was a wine hybrid, and it was tasty. I have high hopes for this saison. I am using a tulip glass, and the temperature is 44 degrees. A frothy and airy white one-fingered head with poor retention. The head dissipated quickly, leaving nothing on the glass. Charting the color around SRM pale straw yellow. The clarity is mostly clear with a smidge of cloudiness. The appearance is average.
Nosing the beer, I smell crackers, cereal grains, a slight Belgium yeast aroma, grass, a light barnyard, a honey-like sweetness, and some earthiness.
The nose does not match the flavor. I taste banana phenols, floral esters, grass, a light barnyard, crackers, and a slight clove note.
The mouthfeel is watery and dry and has a crisp finish. The body is light and has a medium plus carbonation.
I wanted to like this beer; it is just okay. The beer is watery, and the malt profile is thin. The nose was what I was wanting and I did not get it. Thank you, Peter, for this beer.

355 mL can from Maud's Variety; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy, pale straw yellow colour, topped with one inch of soapy, foamy white head that dissipates within several minutes' time. A tight ring of arcing lace is left in its wake, in addition to a thin collar and filmy cap - looks fine. The nose reminds me of a soft drink (specifically, Brio limonata) - lemon zest and juice, with a spicy background character reminiscent of clove and pepper; I'm also getting hints of musty old hay and floral hops. Interesting.

The flavour profile is clean and crisp, with grainy, crackery pale malts and lemon rind to start out. Hints of bread and peppery spiciness by mid-sip, with more lemon rind and some floral, spicy hops rounding out the back end; off-dry aftertaste with shades of clove and herb. Light-medium in body, with assertive carbonation that feels spritzy and crisp on the tongue, lending a firm bite to this brew's otherwise smooth, somewhat soft mouthfeel. One of the most drinkable saisons I've tossed back in quite some time - the pilsner of saisons, indeed.

Final Grade: 4, an A-. I plowed through this serving of Burdock's Tuesday Saison so quickly that I found myself nursing the last few gulps, so as not to run out of beer before I could complete my review. I still would not call this a spectacular saison, as it's somewhat lacking in complexity, with no funkiness whatsoever... but on second thought, that could (should?) be considered a plus for a lighter "classic-style" saison. In fact, this is far more sessionable than most beers of its style, and I am really digging its lemony, spicy flavour profile. Try it if you can find it.

Pale hazy yellow with the "look" of a saison. Big soapy white head on pour, takes some time to fit the whole can into the glass. Flowery hops, quite stern and bitter from burdock. Yeasty breadiness. Thin-bodied, noticeable sparkle. A touch of funk, some more might rescue the thing. Ok, but not stellar.

Somebody at the brewery seems to like Saisons — they are experimenting with the style with Tuesday. This is their second release so far.

Pours remarkably like a light Pale Ale or a witbier. It’s a light white straw colour, a lot cloudier in appearance in my glass than pictures I’ve seen online or the website. Pours a nice four inch thick head with big bubbles that collapses into a very, very creamy dense head that’s supported throughout the drink.

Citrus-y and fruity smells forward here, with a light grainy malt somewhere in the back.

Fairly straightforward taste profile at first but it has a very interesting, strange malty taste in the middle that is really hard to pin down. Maybe a future reviewer will note it. The taste at first is a nice and simple, gentle fruit notes, lemon and apple, very mild spice, incredibly mild grainy backbone. Except for that nifty taste in the middle, it’s very gentle on everything. Mild clove character I think as well.

I can’t exactly say this tastes like most Saisons I’ve had. Feels like a bit of a mix of Pale Ale, Saison, and Witbier.

Body is light and it goes down *incredibly* creamy. I mean, it feels like it coalesces in your mouth into this gentle cream foamy sip. The carbonation is up front in your tongue and then quickly sizzles into a creamy sip in the back. Can’t notice the alcohol at all. Unbelievably smooth. Might drink a keg and not notice, barely feels like there’s anything in your stomach. Finishes dry-ish.

Overall, it’s a very unique beer and one I’d definitely buy again. It’s not a benchmark replica/peer to most farmhouse ales or Saisons on the market, but it is saison style. I really enjoyed this beer, if not for the mouthfeel alone. It easily beats out any cream ale I’ve ever tried on that front.

I bought a can at the LCBO in Ontario 355ml can at 5.5%.
Poured into glass 2finger head lemonade color a little hazy.
Tasty smooth and enjoyable.

355 ml can served fairly cold into a chalice. $4 CDN for the can.

Appearance - Pale yellowy gold brew with hints of salmon. Two fingers of big soft rocky white head. Lots of spotty lacing left behinf after the eventual reduction in head size.

Smell - Yeasty, with some bready notes hints of lemon and some floral aromas too.

Taste - Light and floral, hints of lemon, some bready qualities, some bitterness but not too much. An overall pretty darn tasty beer.

Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied, good expressive and prickly carbonation, finish is semi-dry and matches the flavor nicely.

Overall - while pricey, this is a pretty top notch brew, that sort of blurs the line between traditional sasion and something even more accessible like a pilsner.

 

 

Pale in colour. The nose is bitter and tart as well as the first sip. Then it seems to become quite bland actually. I’ve had better saisons

tasty low abv Saison

 

Can: Poured a clear light yellow color ale. Aroma of soapy notes with light dry floral hops is OK. Taste is also dominated by soapy notes with some herbal dry floral hops notes. Body is a little bit thin with good carbonation. OK saison but nothing to write home about.

A good example of a straightforward saison à la Dupont - peppery, dry, spicy.
