First beer I've had from these guys and I wasn't particularly wowed.
Had a tulip pour of this at the brewery after first tasting a sample. The sample smelled nice, full of tropical fruit notes and I got something similar off the sip of the sample.
However, once I got my full pour, it was as if I was having a different beer. Much more malt-forward and heavy, sweet, with a very muted hop flavor and hardly any bitterness. I could only drink half a pour before tiring of the beer.
As I was drinking it, the beer felt closer to a barleywine, but even in that regard, the malt flavors didn't quite carry into the sweet, caramelly flavor enough to give it a barleywine appeal.
I suppose there's potential here, but I don't think I'm in a rush to get back to Boese.
