In a blind tasting it would be almost impossible to say this German style ale is not a lager. With its bright straw yellow color; this beer hits your pallet with a complex yet subtle wash of biscuit and citrus, giving way to a crisp clean finish. Whether you are swinging a club at the Highlands, lazing on the dock, or watching the world go by from your Front Porch…. enjoy this crushable beauty.

473 mL can from the LCBO; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a clear, pale golden colour, capped off with half a finger of frothy, foamy white head that fades within a couple of minutes or so. A tight collar is left encircling a mostly bare surface; not much in the way of lace, either - looks alright. It smells of doughy, bready, wheaty malts, with subtle hints of grassy hay, orchard fruit and lemon zest.
It's clean, and plenty quaffable - grain husks, wheat, lemon zest and doughy, bready sweetness at the front end, with hints of grassy hay towards the finish. The aftertaste is initially a little sweet, but it dries out quickly, practically begging you to take another sip. What choice do I have other than to oblige? Light in body, with moderately lively carbonation that feels crisp, resulting in a smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. Excellent drinkability; I could drink this all night and be happy as a clam.
Final Grade: 3.68, a passable B grade. What do I want out of a kölsch? Well, it's got to be crisp and clean at the very least, and Calabogie's Front Porch succeeds on both of those points. The details are rough around the edges - the hop profile isn't very assertive or distinctly noble, and there's none of that vinous/grape aspect that I find in top notch kölsch. Still, I pounded my glass back quickly - always a good sign with this style - and I hope to enjoy another as soon as possible.

473 ml can served cold-ish into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for around $3.20 CDN.
Appearance - Clear, pale golden brew with lots of active carbonation. Initially a finger and a half of white head, that fizzles down to a small cap very quickly. No lacing to speak of at the edges of the glass.
Smell - Lots of grain, definitely some corn-like sweetness and a faint grape-y mustiness.
Taste - Thin flavor, some grain, watery, not a whole lot else but possible some peppery citrus aspect to the close.
Mouthfeel - Light bodied and thin, carbonation is expressive and pretty decent for the style. Easy enough to knock back, with good crispness.
Overall - Passable but unspectacular Kolsch, worth a try if you like the style, but better examples abound.

Can: Pours a lightly hazed pale gold color with a 1 finger white cap which lasts to a glass-lacing surface foam....aroma is grainy, lightly fruity, sharp sulfurous mustiness...much like a pear cider with more malt tone to it....flavor is well balanced in the front between pale malts and sharp hops with a fruity discernment...goes dry in the finish with increased bittering and a light hop bite at the end...slight metallic after taste....light bodied, brisk and dry, sharp hoppiness and very quenching...a very good Kolsch interpretation in what is now a sea of craft brewed Kolsch, this one stands out is more authentic than the others.
