473 mL can from Superstore, included in a Calabogie winter sampler pack; no canning date. Served barely chilled.
Pours a foggy golden colour, initially capped with 1.5 inches of foamy, bubbly white head. A little over three minutes later, it has largely eroded down to a tight collar and a wispy-thin cap; multiple arcs & pillars of decorative lace adorn the perimeter. Looks great, but the nose is mostly mundane - grainy, wheaty pale malts, banana, maybe some apples & light clove spiciness.
The flavours are similarly underwhelming - honestly, this drinks more like a mediocre hefe than a genuine saison. Very wheaty/bready at the forefront, with notes of ripe banana and peppery spice cropping up mid-sip. Grassy hops and a light yeast spiciness/phenolic character dissipate into an off-dry aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with lively carbonation that remains spritzy right down to the last swig; it's easy to toss back, but I was bored halfway through this serving.
Final Grade: 3.54, a B grade. I've had plenty of saisons over the years, and I feel pretty confident in stating that Frost Line is an underwhelming example of this style. Now, I'm aware that traditional saisons weren't all that high in alcohol - however, the low abv isn't my issue with this beer. It feels like a paint-by-numbers sort of deal: the basic framework of a saison is there, sure, but there's no signs of creativity whatsoever. The hefeweizen vibes also don't help - and for the record, I love hefes, but I was expecting a saison! A middling effort; worth a tick I guess, but if you're looking for a quality saison, look elsewhere.
